They can fight. They're just terrible at it (penalized for attacking without proficiency in whatever weapon they use).

Honestly, that seems fine to me. And if you're going to be terrible at fighting with weapons, there's no reason for the wizard to not pick up that magic sword no one else wants once they've all got better ...

I think that's to address an unintended consequence of Proficiency Bonus, which is that the Fighter (and Paladin, Barbarian, Ranger, etc) is no longer the class with the best chance to hit monsters. Every class in D&D 5e will end up with a base +6 to hit at 20, adjusting for weapon proficiency and ability score.

It wasn't a joke. They have those objects because they're practical, not as weapons.

It would be weird if wizards were given battleaxes at level one, but they're given things that anyone who goes hiking might carry.

I hike alot. Zero chance I carry a heavy staff duty no reason.
