KOTOR vs. Force Unleashed

Is there anyone who bought both out there? I'm thinking of picking up one but can't decide which to get... Any thoughts?

My copy of Force Unleashed is still with UPS, but early reviews are very positive. And they were for KotOR, too. And there's a lot in both books that isn't especially era-specific. So no easy recommendation, sorry.

I'd probably get the KOTOR book first, but I haven't seen the TFU book yet.

I did play the XBox360 demo of TFU (which I shall now only refer to as "the f***est uppest"), and it's pretty impressive. I hope the book is able to convey that sense of powerful Force ability (ie a campaign that starts off at high levels) without unbalancing the players or NPCs one way or another. Seems like a tough goal to achieve.

Not surprisingly, it depends on what you're looking for. Do you want setting info or new rules? Do you want a setting where you can't swing a stick without hitting a force-user? Then KOTOR is probably for you. Do you want a darker, more gritty setting? Then Unleashed is probably your best bet. As Drothgery mentioned, there are plenty of crunchy bits in each that aren't era specific.

I have both books. For me, Unleashed is the better of the two. That's not to say that KOTOR os bad, but I'm not steeped in KOTOR lore like some, so I'm sure that has impacted my opinion.

How was that for a non-answer? :D

If you have specific questions about the books, I'd be happy to try to answer them.

I looked through KotOR in the store, had some ships & gear, some force powers IIRC. I think a bit too much space may have been dedicated to the NPC's from comics and both games, but it was interesting to read some of the KotOR 2 stuff that never became apparent in the actual game. :)

Force Unleashed was also there, but I personally don't care for the setting very much. Thusly I didn't read it. I think the main thing to keep in mind is that you're not playing the video game. Supposedly the FU storyline (videogame) is quite good, but I didn't buy into the idea of a "secret apprentice", so I"m not a good judge there. FU is basically "play between movies 3 and 4" and I'm not sure how that would play out.

As regards the settings, I think KotOR would make the more epic battle/ adventure feel.

EXTREME Star Wars!

Bleh...

To fix this...

1. Cover the 'Force Unleashed' title with a piece of tape. Write 'Dark Times Campaign Guide' on said piece of tape.
2. Cross out the Unleashed feat and the abilities that key off of it.

Now you have a perfectly good (in fact, excellent by early reviews; UPS still has my copy) non-EXTREME rulebook on the period between Episode III and Episode IV.

Drop them both. Play Morrowind. (Ducks the food being thrown)

The Force Unleashed seems more action and KOTOR was a bit more like an RPG, so it is really more of a personal choice.

heh...I think he means the books, not the video games;)
I have both books. I was never a big fan of the old republic era, and I prefer dark and serious games, so that slants my opinion.
I think FU is the better book for crunch. Some of the force powers are in both. The organisation rules in FU are excellent. The ships in KotOR are better. I think the presentation of the campaign in FU is awsome. Want to fight the empire, but not be bound by the later trilogy storyline? You are set. It's very well written and really gets you into what it was like in the dark times.
As for the "unleashed" stuff: if you are looking for rules to make an even more uber jedi, you'll be dissapointed. The Unleashed powers are one feat that lets you spend destiny points to do something over the top. Once per destiny point. You won't be knocking down AT-ATs with force push every encounter. Another bonus worth mentioning here is that FU introduces a few new destinies)
That said, KotOR is a great book too and I would highly recommending picking up both eventually. But if you can only get one, I think you will get more out of FU.
