Kulan: Knightfall's Heroes of Carnell Game [IC]

"I'm willing to try to help get it open," Aureus offers. "If the one named Jorziza was truly a rogue, then that symbol will probably work for me." She motions to Litrix. "Or its for him," she considers. "Litrix, would you consider your heritage to be enough like a lizard-kin?"

"If it works for us," Quinn adds. "That can't be a coincidence, can it?."
"No more than you would consider your heritage to be like a hyena- or gnoll-kin." Litrix bristles, but shrugs "I guess it is possible, but I am no rogue. I'm new in your company and no higher power saw me with you as of yet. Maybe I'm simply here to open the door once you unlock it? I could be a brave warrior, but that would leave Sir Quinn to be the rogue. I'm guessing Druid, Mage and Holy warrior roles are taken."

He asks Aureus,

"May I look at those scrolls?"

Assuming they aren't magical?
Aureus continues to hold out the scrolls for Phar. He was so engrossed in the studying the door that he hadn't notice her trying to give them to him. She grins and swishes her tail. Once the two scrolls are in his possession, he can tell instantly they are magical scrolls. One of the scrolls is obviously an arcane scroll while the other is probably divine. He doesn't detect as visible auras on the scrolls.

OOC: A successful Spellcraft check will allow Phar to decipher the spells on the two scrolls. The DC for success is 20 + spell level. Phar can try once per day, and I think it is per spell (not per scroll).

Caerth focuses on the scorpion above all else, ignoring the people moving about and chatting to each other. Instead, the druid slowly holds out his hands, not holding any weapons but trying to have an open posture while still being ready to react if things turn ugly.

"Caerth Heart-Of-Oak," he introduces himself to the creature in the language of druids, following up with a description of where he is from and what druids he has encountered before. Likely the scorpion doesn't understand the words, but perhaps it recognizes Druidic from long ago.

"Stratesus is the sand, sun and water. He is life."

The words are a variation of what druids say when one of them has passed, and Caerth repeats it in all the languages he knows.

OOC: Not sure if you need me to roll anything for this interaction?
Quinn looks towards Caerth. He considers saying something, but he can tell the young half-orc druid is completely focused on the scorpion. The others either watch the druid or continue to study the door.

The scorpion seems to sense that Caerth doesn't want to hurt it. The beast still hesitates, however. Aeron's stories about Stratesus referred to Shouzas as being male, so if it is Shouzas, the scorpion is less likely to try to sting Caerth. When Caerth mentions Stratesus by name, the beast seems to recognize it as well. It makes the same trilling sound, but with all the talking going on among Caerth's allies, the creature won't relax completely.

OOC: You can roll a Wild Empathy check. The scorpion is treated as a magical beast.

Aureus looks at Caerth. "Do any of Aeron's stories mention the desert or these Boots being seen around here?"
OOC: Do they?
Caerth has been thinking about Aureus's question for a few minutes while the hutaakan had been going through the small treasure room. The half-orc druid remembers Aeron telling him that Stratesus traveled far and wide, including every part of the Strandlands. Stratesus and the Boots fought in the First Ogre War, explored most of the Thunder Lands, and even went to sea many times. They spent a great deal of time adventuring throughout the Wasting Shores to the south and the Bahyrstian Heights to the southwest.

They helped defend Elderspire during the war and often delved into the caves and ruins of the surround hills and desert. And, while the Grave Shores lie north of the Elderspire, the smaller, mainly coastal, desert is usually considered part of the Wasting Shores on maps. Aeron's tales also referred to the Boots exploring many of the Wasting Shores' ruins south of the Elderspire, so it its just as likely that they also found this old ruin and rebuilt parts of it. None of Aeron's stories mentioned this ruin, however, so it might have been a secret that the Boots kept to themselves.

OOC: Note that the greatest epic tales of the Fellowship of the Boot were those that took them out of the Strandlands, during the war, north into the Eastern Shores and far west beyond the Thunder Mountains. They helped defend the walls of the city of Hellekan during the Siege of a Hundred Nights. (Caerth had asked Aeron to tell that story dozens of times!)

The Boots became more than heroes of the Thunder Lands after that prolonged siege. They became renown throughout the Chara Coast and the Kingdom of Izmer. At least, that's what Aeron had told Caerth. History isn't one of Caerth's skills, so what he knows is influenced greatly by what his mentor told him as a boy.

Elderspire is located just south of the Grave Shores along the coast. It sits on coastal hills that overlook the sea. It is a key stopping point along the main trail that leads from Carnell in the north to the city of Helt to the south. It is an old tower that remains somewhat strategic, although there isn't a town located near it (just a few fishing and mining hamlets).

Aureus nods. She understands Litrix's distaste at the thought of being considered one of the lizardfolk. She tries not to sound too embarrassed. "The rogue's symbol is probably for me... well, if it is going to be for any of us, it's probably for me."

She waits quietly for Caerth to finish with the scorpion. She stands still and watches her druid friend try to pacify the beast completely. She's itching to try the other double doors, but it can wait.

Phar nods to Aureas in thanks and, noticing that the Scorpion is being disturbed by the talking, he quietly moves away from the group to peruse the scrolls

With his companions remaining quiet, Caerth tries once again to calm what he thinks is Shouzas. Holding his hands low and his voice likewise, the druid repeats Stratesus' name a few times.

"Friends," he emphasizes in Druidic, then repeats it in the common tongue.

He looks at the scorpion expectantly.

Once the scorpion is settled (or not), Caerth will share what he knows about desert stories of the Company of the Boot.

Phar nods to Aureus in thanks and, noticing that the Scorpion is being disturbed by the talking, he quietly moves away from the group to peruse the scrolls.
Aureus folds her arms and stays by the door and watches Caerth work his magic.

Angus notices Phar's action, and does likewise; he backs up several steps, very slowly, so that his hooves make as little sound as possible, and then he kneels down, in a relaxed, non-threatening pose, and remains completely silent.
Maur turns toward the proceedings and simply stays motionless, any move from his side is accompanied by a sound of metal moving. The plates settle and lock in place as he freezes and the sound stops.
Litrix remains where he is, not moving and quiet.
The scorpion seems completely focused on the half-orc druid.

If the scorpion had been a mammal, it probably would have blinked. Instead, it chitters happily and begins doing roundabout circles like it is a happy puppy. It keeps its claws down and is no longer tense. At least, Caerth is certain that it is no longer tense.

Its happiness quickly shifts to a state of weariness. It seems very tired; its carapace is cracked where Phar's magic missiles hit it earlier. It likely needs to rest. it chitters at Caerth again before it retreats back up into its lair and half buries it in the loose rubble of the roof. Caerth follows it up into its lair to make sure it is comfortable. It has ground the stone and mortar into large pebbles. There is also a significant amount of sand in its lair.

Shouzas, and Caerth is now certain that the creature is Shouzas, isn't bothered by Caerth's presence. It enters what Aeron once told Caerth is a state of relaxed immobility. It isn't exactly the same as sleep, but the beast should be fine. It won't rouse again until the sun goes down.

"Is it okay?" Aureus asks once Caerth comes back down from the scorpion's lair.

Angus says, in a low, quiet, calm tone: "Ah shoul' apologize fer m' skeptical cynicism earlier; I had no idea that beasties lok thaes'en here could think, reason, or act waeth honor. I was thinkin' 'em mindless, I was. Now, I am glad that we didn't kill it."

Once Phar knows what the various magical object do, he waives the divine scrolls towards Caerth up in the tower,

"These scrolls are druidic in nature. Lonstrider and cure light wounds, created by a powerful caster."

"These other are of arcane nature"
he puts them in his scroll case on his belt "The potion protects from projectiles."

He holds them out for anyone who wants it,

"Perhaps it is time to see if we are meant to unseal this door."

He stands by the door, ready to touch the seal when Caerth activates the sigil.
