Kulan: Knightfall's Heroes of Carnell Game [IC]

Aureus looks at the other chest and is amazed by its beauty. "Wow, this chest might be worth a fortune all by itself. Ooh, so pretty." The chest is made from the finest oak and reinforced with adamantine bands. The wood is beautifully engraved and the chest is extremely heavy. Aureus tries to pull it out from the wall and nearly falls over. "Damn, it's heavy!"

Quinn comes over and helps her, and it is almost too heavy for the gladiator-knight. "Oof! Heavy indeed!"

They finally pull it out far enough for Aureus to get a good look at the whole chest. Even though she already went over it for traps, she checks again. She says a small prayer to Vaflar, the patron of her people back on Maran. Her deity must be watching over her, because not only does she not find any traps, she finds a clue as to how the chest opens. It's a good thing too. The lock is something she's only every heard described to her.

"Wow, this lock is amazing! I'd love to take it apart and study it," she says. Quinn clears his throat. "Right, no, I won't."

She spend nearly two hours examining the chest, its design, and the lock. She coos and pats the lock. Then, she kisses it. "We are going to be the best of friends. I'm going to take such good care of you, don't you worry."

"Aureus!" Qi says.

"What? I'm just getting to know her," she hugs the chest.

"Just open it, already," Qi insists. There is anger in the adamantine rods voice.

"Don't be jealous, you're still my favourite, my lovely lady," Aureus giggles.

Aureus gets to work on the lock. Vaflar's will is with her. It takes another half an hour, but the lock opens. It isn't just a click. The mechanism shifts and folds and recedes into the chest and the lid lifts by itself.

"So intricate. So lovely."

She prays to her god again. "Please don't let it be more clothes?"

She looks inside. "Wow!"

The bottom of the chest is filled with gold coins. It's not enough to make the chest so heavy. That was the chest itself. The inside of the chest's lid is decorated with the Mark of the Boots, as well as the personal sigils of the six main members of the fellowship. There are other sigils decorating the inside of the chest, all engraved into an adamantine interior.

"This is a good haul of gold coins. Hmm, these aren't like the Strandlands current coins. Probably really old. Out of date."

She pulls out a hemp bag that was sitting on top of the coins. She shakes it. More coins? She opens the bag. "Platinum coins. Very nice. Similar to the gold. Several hundred, at least."

She looks back at Quinn, smiling, whose gone back to the shelves to help sort through the books. "I'm so happy."

Aureus pulls out a scroll case next. It has a single scroll in it. She gives it Phar to examine. There are also potion in the chest. Five in total. She takes each one and puts them on the table in between the two shelves.

She saves the best for last. Well, she thinks its the best. It is a fine looking dagger in a leather scabbard. The handle is carved wood and the blade is made of well carved bone. "I like you," she says to the dagger. It is well balanced and the bone blade looks as sharp as the day it was put away in the scabbard.

She brings it over to Caerth. "I don't know if this was Stratesus' or not, but it looks like something a druid would use. Or maybe a rogue with a savage streak?"

OOC: Aureus - Search check (oak chest for traps): 1D20+10 = [20]+10 = 30 (that's a 40!) [no traps]
(Aureus gets a +2 luck bonus to open the chest)

Aureus Takes 20 again. 20+18+2=40. That is just enough to open the chest's superior lock. I had planned for it to be a failure, but I'm couldn't ignore the Natural 20 on the Search check.

After the research and subsequent rest, Maur smiles at the group.
"Moradin has seen fit to help up in a more direct manner. I can make a pact of stalwart warriors with any two of you. I'd say Angus and Quinn would be the best since they fight without spells. Caerth and I cast more. Also, I can bestow a simple spell on several of you. But it takes from my daily power and I am still responsible for the use of the said spell."
He looks seriously around. "I trust each of you that you will use it in a manner consistent with our mission and in the just and true cause."
After some discussion, Phar requests and gets Comprehend languages and Sanctuary with the understanding that the languages must be made permanent that same day. Or it can wait for a better time.

For Angus and Quinn (or Caerth?) - the spell is permanent so I can cover everyone after some downtime

Phar nods his head to Maur,

"I will treat this gift with great respect. I cannot make anything permanent until tomorrow. Let us continue our search of this compound and then rest - perhaps take an extra day to prepare against our foe. In the morning, I will have the proper spells prepared to make things permanent. But first..."

Phar goes to the chest where Aureas is counting money. He picks up a black pearl at the bottom of the pile.

"In the morning I can find out what some of the other artifacts can do but, for today, if you do not mind Cearth."

Phar unfurls a scroll and then gently, and with great reverence touches the staff which is laid across the body of the great druid. He reads the scroll and, as the paper burns up, the function of the staff is burned into Phar's mind.

Grabbing the Pearl and Identifying the Staff using the scroll which only uses a single action.

This staff is especially good against the incorporeal.

After identifying the staff, Phar looks at the weapons, analyzing the magic upon them, seeing if he can divine any of their properties. He does this while people are searching the room and Cearth is reading the journal.

"I will accept your gift, my friend," Quinn replies.

It takes a moment for Maur to get Aureus' attention, but she to agrees to abide by his request.

OOC: {DM looks at Stalwart Pact}. Nice! Yikes!

Phar nods his head to Maur,

Caerth motions for Phar to proceed.

Phar unfurls a scroll and then gently, and with great reverence touches the staff which is laid across the body of the great druid. He reads the scroll and, as the paper burns up, the function of the staff is burned into Phar's mind.

This staff is especially good against the incorporeal.
Phar can see the weapon's properties clearly. And, there is something else. The staff's name comes into his mind. The name that Stratesus gave the weapon: Thundershadow.

TaranTheWanderer said:

Maur helps Phar with his own specialized knowledge of crafting and different languages.

OOC: aid another for small bonus
Phar finds that most of the weapons are beyond his ability to identify, without magic, using only his knowledge of spellcraft, even with Maur's aid. He does manage to divine the properties of the silvered glaive. It is an interesting weapon, but not that powerful. It is an extending weapon. It can expand or retract to be used in different ways. The enchantment on it, otherwise, is quite simple.

Aureus takes the tarnished silver trinket box out of her pack and puts it on the bench. She then asks for Quinn and Maur to help move the other chest in the room behind the dais into Stratesus' chamber. They agree only after she assures them it is not trapped.

"I'm not going to be able to get this one open," she says. "I got lucky with that one." She points to oak-adamantine chest. "Best to move it in here while we rest."

She is surprised by the looks she gets.

"We're not going through all of this first," she says. She looks disappointed.

"We must secure this place, as Maur suggests," Quinn says. "While giant spiders might make good guardians against others, they could also be a nuisance to us. Such beasts have a tendency to swarm."

"And, there could be something more dangerous... unknown... unseen," Cruel Justice adds. "However, luck could be on your side."

"Let's not bring luck into this conversation," Aureus says. "Best not to tempt Aladius."

"Who?" Quinn asks.

"Sorry, the Maran God of Unpredictability."

Each of you says your peace on the matter. Caerth would prefer to rest and head directly to the shrine to deal with Eike. Angus agrees with Aureus. Both Litrix and Phar stand with Maur and Quinn on the matter. Aureus shrugs and relents. It take a bit of time to convince Angus and Caerth. The Harqualian centaur agrees first. Eventually, the half-orc druid gives in, but he's not happy about it. He had wanted to seal away the legacy of the Boots and come back to them after dealing with Brutus' killer.

"We'll get there, my friend," Quinn assures him. "You have Stratesus' staff to help you. These other weapons might be useful to us, as well."

"Well, let's get to it," Aureus packs away the The Hermit's possessions, but she doesn't reseal the oak-adamantine chest. She's not sure she'll get it open again.

One by one, you file out of the Hermit's resting place. Caerth lingers at the chamber's doors... just for a moment.

After the chamber is closed, but not sealed, the hutaakan rogue begins to systematically go to each door leading into others part of the temple ruins. She first inspects the stone double doors that Litrix made note of earlier. He points out their more military-like design.

"Ooh, more treasure," Aureus says excitedly, her tail swishing.

"Be careful, my dear," Qi insists.

Aureus steadies herself and searches the doors for traps. She takes her time. No need to rush. "It's not trapped."

She turns her attention to the doors' locking mechanism. It's almost as intricate as the one on the mechanical chest, but time has rusted the lock. It is easy to get open with time and patience. Part of the lock shifts and cracks as she pries it open. "It was in bad shape. It's not going to lock again unless we repair it."

She lets Quinn and Maur pull the doors open. Inside is what is left of an old armoury. There are six empty weapons racks. The room is smaller that Straesus' chamber and in much poorer condition. The walls of the southern half of the room are half collapsed, rubble sits on the floor. Magic hasn't protected this room. The east wall in the southeast corner is nearly gone. You can see an old table has been shoved up against the hole. Its placement almost seems like it was placed there intentionally to plug the break in the wall.

Propped up in the northeast corner of the room is an old suit of plate armour. It looks like it is sized for someone very small, almost petite. It looks like it might be in good condition, although it might need to be cleaned, or even repaired.

"Well, this room's a bust," Aureus says disappointedly. She moves to inspect the other set of double doors while the others inspect the old armoury. She finds that the wooden doors are a lot more simple than the others. She finds no traps, and the doors' lock is easy for her to open. "Ha! Too easy."

She tries to pull them open. They don't budge.

"Why are all these doors so heavy!?" She exclaims. She tries again, but the doors are stuck.

"Easy, my dear, you're going to hurt yourself," Qi says.

"Aureus, check the floor in armoury," Quinn insists.

Aureus gives up on the wooden doors. She goes back to the armoury and searches the floors for traps, carefully, methodically. She doesn't find anything. "No traps."

She pokes her head through the opening to look at the other side. She pulls away quickly and covers her nose. "Ew, it stinks in there. There is another room. It's in shambles."

OOC: Aureus Takes 20 to Search both the stone and wooden double door for traps and to open both sets of doors.
Search [x2]: 20+10 = 30 (success)
Open Lock [x2]: 20+18 = 38 (success)

The double wooden doors that lead southwest are stuck shut. DC 25 Strength check to pry them open.

Aureus takes 20 for Searching the armoury's floor for traps.

"The door might not be heavy, but stuck in webs. Or simply blocked from the other side by the rubble. Let me try with Angus and Maur."
Litrix gently moves Aureus from the door.
"Opening of unknown doors is best done by the heavily armored. You did your part, let us do ours."

OOC: I think Angus is strongest, assuming we can all fit around the door, Maur and Litrix can help (aid another). Or we can just bust the door.

“Be ready to move out of the way in case something attacks.”

Phar pulls out some fur and a glass rod clear powdered dust indicating that he is readying to cast lightning bolt Wall of Force

Will cast lightning bolt wall of force If anything threatening comes at the door.
