L4W Discussion Thread III

I don't think it needs to be a proposal, but starting a new thread to discuss what should/shouldn't be in the template would be a good idea. Consider this a nod ;)

Well, I'll definattly be eagerly proposing we adopt the psion come this october, so much better then waiting till ~june 2010

I definitely can't understand the sentiment of getting mad that there are materials included in DDI that arn't in a print book, it would bother me if the reverse were true, but I would feel hey, that's how it goes, if I want X i have to pay for it. As it stands right now DDI saves me a TON of money, I've only bought 2 books since I subscribed, everything I need comes to me out of the books at a tiny tiny cost, it's the best value for a cheapsake like me.

As for it being exactly like it will appear in the book, I can only take them at their word for that, but personally I feel that if it changes then that should be considered errata, and I know I would be willing to alter my psion to fit any errata published.

As I stated before, it creates a two-tiered system as power creep will, without any uncertainty come into effect (just see background traits for an example) and those who have the DDI have access that others don't (and can't in my case, stupid incompatible OS). That being said I don't think people are mad, but rather brgining up legitimate discussion points that you shouldn't knock down without contemplation, especially as you mention you'd be upset paying and not getting it... I'm glad DDI has saved you tons of money, although I can carry my books with me and if I ever decide to get off the WOTC pay-go-round I still have my gaming products.

I don't believe I simply dismissed anything out of hand, I stated my feelings and said I couldn't understand the other feeling.

I'm sorry that you can't access DDI, and I admit wizards has a LONG way to go on compatability issues, customer support issues and technical issues such as the guy who can't login. I make no excuses for these things.

My point is we'll always have a multi teired system, that's unavoidable

We have the people who have the core books only,
People with core + martial power
people with core + PHB 2
people with core + PHB 2 + martial power

How is a class that appears in Dragon magazine any different?

Please do not take this as an attack, but let me ask, if Dragon Mag was still a print magazine and you choose not to subscribe and there were a class or race in the magazine would you still feel it was unfair to the people who didn't subscribe? Does online make it somehow different?

From my perspective, ALL of the material is unavailable to me as I don't own ANY books. Either buy the book or buy the online access. It costs money either way.

Access to new material costs money either way and we shouldn't get too hung up about the mode in which it is delivered.

it operates really really poorly on some browsers although I've not had any problems on Firefox and I can't think of any OS that won't do Firefox.

I think it may be the PDFs that he's referring to, PDF is a proprietary format and many open source advocates don't feel comfortable using closed in software even when it is free.

I've had no problems with Firefox on Linux.

There are lots of open-source PDF viewers. I have at least three installed here for some reason. And I don't think these PDF's have DRM or anything on them.

Keep in mind that in 3.5, many of the splatbooks had prestige classes and feats culled from various editions of Dragon Magazine. You have to pay of the magazine, and you have to pay for the splatbooks, so there's really no difference (other than the material in the splatbooks are often better tested and more balanced than the ones in Dragon Magazine).

Also, not to beat a dead horse, but I'd just like to point out that the cover of PH3 has a minotaur on it, which leads me to believe that minotaur will be one of the "new" races. I'm willing to bet that the minotaur race in PH3 WILL NOT have the ability to wield large weapons. I think Wizards finally realized that oversized weapons are broken in 4e.

The minotaur has already lost the oversized property in its incarnation released in DM a few months ago 8we even opened a discussion but we never got to the end of it).
