L4W Discussion Thread III

Got.It.

You know when you wanted to play the jack-of-all-trades back in 3e and you were fooled by the fluff text in the PHB and tried to play a bard? Was that kinda fun but frustrating?
I understand you, my friend, but those days are over. The bard is the cool!!
Just be a half-elf and multiclass till you don't know who you are anymore!! Eternal seeker twenty levels early! Yay!!

Ata, I chose a greatspear for Thandorin for a few reasons.

1 - Sometimes your foe is already flanked, in which case you can give your ally an attack with CA without flanking yourself.

2 - Reach lets you do your thing with allies when, for some reason, you can't move adjacent (terrain, monsters, etc.).

3 - Having your basic attack be +6 / 1d10+5 with reach is really nice to have if there simply is no good place to use one of your at wills.

Just why I made that choice.

As for beast rangers, I think they look cool, and would take one over an archer ranger any day - I'd rather stand and use my bow with a bear between me and my enemies than stand and use my bow and have defensive mobility. And even if I want defensive mobility, it's just a feat, I can still get it.

Uhm yeah those are some good reasons too. I'll think about it some more while I put down some background...
Oh and yeah you should never forget that the really worthless choice is the archery parth. A beastmaster is just as good (well, better actually) an archer since it loses next to nothing.

someone will have to add new code to the power template, Aftereffect.

Fires of Life, Petrified Redwood's first level daily power has an Aftereffect, but It doesn't show that way with normal coding.

I assume this is either me not knowing what to do (likely)
or the code isn't there in the first place.

Phoenix my old friend... SO good to see you again! I made a human warlock... and just got my first of two approvals last night... I'm itching to try Patronis too as I have a killer back story on how he manifested his powers and why he acts the way he does.. I'm looking forward to L4W very much :D

The thing that disappoints me the most about the B.M. Ranger is that he can either attack with his weapon, or the beast... but (unless you make a very wimpy, poorly-equipped ranger) your weapon will have a better chance to hit, and do more damage than the beast. So yes, the companion can help with flanking (or keep someone off you when you're at range)... but other people in your party can do that for you. Meanwhile the two-weapon ranger is swinging away with 2 waraxes, and... well, I'm sure you get the point.

Now, with all that being said... I'm seriously considering making a Dwarven B.M. Ranger (with a sled dog companion) who is M.C. rogue (dwarven trapsmith), and who will steer toward the Avalanche Hurler P.P.

With all the thought I've put in, it makes me said that there isn't a sort of "twin strike" (at-will power) that lets both ranger & companion have a melee basic in the same turn.

Keep in mind that while the beast may seem a little poor at first level, it scales very well; so much so that it often has a better chance to hit than the ranger does in paragon+. Of course, I haven't played one so I can't tell you from firsthand experience, but that's what I hear on the intertubes.

So I gotta ask the question. I have been looking at the Avenger, and ever since I heard about them the flavor just rocked my world. Especially with the Zealous Assassin Paragon and the Punisher of the gods Epic Destiny in Last months Dragon... It's a ways off before the proposals go out for those things but the flavorful joy of it is infinite.

Unfortunately I have been reading a lot of flack for the Avenger as a striker. The general opinion on the wizards forums seems to be that the Avenger isn't much of a striker at all and it saddens me to think that I wanna play this super cool assassin who cant actually kill anything. I don't suppose anyone has taken a closer look at it or done the math?
