Lack of sleep

Ok, I know the effects of sleeping in Medium or Heavy Armor, but what are the effects of staying awake all night.

I cannot find a rule for it in the PHB or DMG. I'm sure I'm just missing it.

i suck at the rules.

but maybe try the feat: Endurance. the spell sleep. and the word: exhaustion as potential aids.

edit: also the movement section. esp forced march

and resting to regain spells.

A certain Admin could really help with this.

I would suggest making fortitude checks to see if the characters become fatigued. There may be an "official" rule via Sage Advice or some other route, but I don't believe there is on in the SRD.

Different people react differently to sleep loss. But for some uniformity, you might want enforce a roll after 24 hours of not sleeping and then every hour thereafter or after they exert themselves (like combat, riding, etc). If they become exhausted, I suggest rolling every hour to see if the character falls asleep.

It's a bit silly, but per the RAW, you can stay awake for days or months without ill effects (assuming you are a creature type that requires sleep).

Of course you don't recover spells if you are an arcane caster, etc.

However, the rules do have a provision for walking:

Walk: A character can walk 8 hours in a day of travel without a problem. Walking for longer than that can wear him or her out (see Forced March, below).

Forced March: In a day of normal walking, a character walks for 8 hours. The rest of the daylight time is spent making and breaking camp, resting, and eating.

A character can walk for more than 8 hours in a day by making a forced march. For each hour of marching beyond 8 hours, a Constitution check (DC 10, +2 per extra hour) is required. If the check fails, the character takes 1d6 points of nonlethal damage. A character who takes any nonlethal damage from a forced march becomes fatigued. Eliminating the nonlethal damage also eliminates the fatigue. It's possible for a character to march into unconsciousness by pushing himself too hard.

Fatigue seems like a good mechanic, and you could house rule that staying awake for 24 hours is the same as walking for 8 hours.

There aren't any. :)

However, many people use the following as an adequate substitute:

EDIT: Drat! Andargor beat me to it. :D

If you ever actually use those rules in play, you'll find out just how hard it is for a low level character to stay awake. So don't get stuck without sleep until at least 6th level :)

i think the other reason for all the nonrules may have sumpin to do with elves.

for some reason they made it so elves don't sweep any more.

it makes for a messy set of rulz. when you have exceptions to them.
