Lack of water

Exceedingly rare. Most of the cases of "water intoxication" on record are due to drugs, especially in recent years Ectasy. If you drink way, way, way too much water without being able to let it pass through your system, the amount of solutes in your body decreases. Since the electrolytic effects that solutes have allow your nerves to work, this is a bad thing.

Hypernatremia is the technical name for the condition. A woman running the Chicago Marathon here a few years ago died from it.

But, as demiurge says, it's very very rare.

Hyponatremia is not as rare as you think. Scientific American has a blurb about it in its latest issue (July, I don't think August is out yet). They checked 488 marathonists, and at the end of the run 65 of them had hyponatremia. That's roughly 13% of the runners. Now, that's not a lot, and that's doesn't mean anything toward non-marathon runners, but its still something to consider.

Why not? It's true. Have a drug test coming up and you just smoked a bunch of dope? Drink water and pee until it hurts. Seriously.

Der Kludge was talking to me, I'm pretty sure.

Oh, and jsut for the record: Whole natural water does cleanse the body of filthy, filthy toxins. And it works even better if you put in some fresh lemon juice, which acts as an astringent. Its great stuff, don't knock it until you try it, kludgie.

If you feel the need, let the beating commence. I'd really rather not, but had to take the bait. It would have been quicker, but I've been offline a lot lately.

I think given that Ferret drinks no where near 8 glasses of water per day, and is still alive should be enough to dispel that myth.
Yes, but alive and doing well are two dirrent things. I have a buddy I game with that is constanly dehydrated - every so often, he bonks!

As Eltern already said, your body is different from everyone elses. I don't know very many people that actually ingest that much water in a day.
Unfortunately, yes this is true - most people walk around in a mild state of dehydration - however, those that are less exercise minded (ie. gamers, technicians, most everybody!!) can get away with it and not suffer any MAJOR physical problems (The most notable ones being kidney stones (as stated elsewhere), dizzines or vertigo, poor digestion leading to ulsers and urinary tract infections). No these aren't guaranteed to happen, but are certainly possible.

Given that, what 98% of our body is water, it obviously comes from somewhere. Water does take many forms.
And don't anyone even *think* about suggesting that water is good because it cleanses your body of toxins unless you want a good beatdown.
No water does not clean toxins out of your body, your kidneys and liver do that, of course they need plenty of water to function correctly, so...
BTW I am a former medico who abandoned the craft due to lawyeritis (the fear of rising malpractice insurance costs)

Gents, let's please not have the "water cleanses/does not cleanse your toxins" argument repeated. I'm still in therapy over blowing my sanity check on the one from a couple of months back... :)

EDIT: Let me amend myself. If it can be discussed civilly, I'm all for it. But I just want to avoid large arguments that force me to lock the conversation.
