D&D 4E Lack of Wizard Feat Choice in 4e?

ArtofSymmetry

First Post
I know that Wizards are not a feat based class like fighters, but it would be nice to have some choice. I mean really, I scoured the list in PHB and I came up with.
1. Expanded Spellbook
2. Skill Focus (good for everyone as well)
3. Arcane Reach (But really, I barely qualify for that as an Eladrin with +2 Dex)
4. Second Implement
5. Spell Focus
6. Arcane Mastery
7. Arcane Accuracy

Then there are the three feats that add bonuses to attacks but those are universal so I will not include them.

If anybody has anything from other books, or homebrew stuff, or some reason to shoot me down, please post. :)

There is also Toughness, and the feats that add damage to elemental damage. My wizard PC took Burning Blizzard.

Hopefully more will be added with Arcane Power--but the feat choice isn't what I really want to see. I'm more interested in seeing if Arcane Power adds some choices to the Wizard that make it more controllerish.

I was stupid and didn't take enough wisdom to get Burning Blizzard so I have to wait and get a wisdom item. :(

Toughness Is good, but I built my wizard with a few useful items and skills so I can escape taking much melee damage.

But I agree with you on the book. It should come out In March I think. There are two things I'd like to see develop from Arcana. I want to see a more controlling wizard, as it is I feel like a watered down striker. I would also like to see a Fight/Wizard Striker class from Arcana. Something similar to the Duskblade in 3.5

As it stands I think wizards are a lot of fun, but still have a lot to grow. The funnest part would have to be the cantrips. Pretending that light needs an attack roll and scoring a critical hit makes my day.:D

Improved initiative is very useful for wizards, going first often means that you can use a big AOE attack without the risk of hitting your allies.

Also there is probably a feat or two based on race that can be useful too

You'll be waiting a while, unless stat-boosting items been houseruled back in IYG!

"Arcana"? Are you talking about Arcane Power? If so, it won't have any classes in it; they are going to be in PHBs and campaign-setting Players Guides. EDIT: Unless I've missed some change-of-policy announcement.

glass.

Yeah, definitely.

Also, if you don't mind homebrew material, I have a bunch of feats I made up for wizards in my campaign setting. They both rely on two things: changing the spellbook class feature and familiar rules as multi-classing.

Anyway, here's the link if you're interested:

Dont' forget the wizards most important feat, proficiency with leather armor!!:)
Exactly.

Leather Armor Proficiency + Toughness. Two absolute gimmie feats for Wizards.

Paragon tier is when the feat choices really open up, though.

Cheers, -- N

@Fede - Right you are, I already got improved initiative, but I'm an eladrin so all I can get at level 3 is Eladrin Soldier for racial feats. (Still haven't decided my level 2 feat, probably toughness or leather armor)

@Glass - I believe a Periapt of Wisdom is a level 11 item, I may be wrong but when I get that I'll have enough.

And on the classes, I hadn't read Martial Power but I just did and it has Paragon Classes and a bunch of cool stuff for fighters. So I'm restating my hope from new classes, to a paragon or two that opens up more 'Gish' type characters.

And It's in House Rules because I was wondering about Homebrew material, It could have went in the other one though if your being neurotic

@Kzach - Awesome, I love homebrew but since I'm not DM i spose I have to ask.

@Stalker0 and Nifft - Right you are, I hadn't thought about leather armor. ty as well

Also, if anyone is interested, I found a really cool homebrew shadowcaster class for 4e, sadly though it is slightly vague on many things and I think the spells don't go all the way to 25 and there are no Paragon Paths. It's almost completed though, It just needs someone to finish and polish it up.

I don't remember if there is an item called periapt of wisdom, but i'm sure that if it exists it's different from the old edition's one. In 4th ed there are no items that add to stats, so the only way to raise wisdom is at levels 4, 8, 11 ecc
