Lantern Archon cohort?

The share spells requires the thing to be within 5 feet of you at ALL times. Barring house rules that allow for simultaneous movement, that AMF ends for it as soon as one of you move in combat.
He's using the clause of Share Spells that lets you cast a personal spell on your Familiar.

Still doesn't technically work, mind - Antimagic Field is an effect centered on you, not a personal spell.

... which is why you use planar binding or planar ally and not Leadership. :)

Which works for some things, but not others - for instance, it's harder to control the build of somethig you Planar Bind than take as a Cohort; so a specific set of class levels is kinda difficult to have on your Lantern Archon. You still get the Magic Circle and Universal Translator effects... but not so much on the rest when you Planar Bind.

Both "builds" are technically in the hands of your DM. According to the feat, "a character can try to attract a cohort of a particular race, class, and alignment." Where are you getting the idea that Leadership grants you the ability to build your Cohort?

You really think it's easier to convince a DM that you should get a cohort with "LA: -" than it is to research the truename of an outsider with levels in a particular class? Your DM may vary, of course.

I like the idea of a lantern archon druid. Need to pick something up? shapeshift into a bear :)

Seriously though, a sorcerer with eschew materials is probably your best bet.

On the original topic - they're really not balanced for standard D&D play. They'd constantly be either way overpowered or completely useless and boring. That's just not fun.

Alignment restrictions... :\

(It'd work under my house rules, but Core Archons and Core Druids are incompatible. :( )

They have relatively light defenses, several game-changing powers, and can use even less equipment than a quadruped (my players like to make jokes about making bags to put over them so they can carry stuff). They're not PC suitable, due to equipment issues combined with a lack of versatility, including low skill points. Their LA has to be kept pretty high due to teleport and untyped damage ray attacks, as well as immunities, but that makes them into glass cannons.

If you're playing a 9+ game they're probably okay as PCs or cohorts, but at that level, there's much better choices, like a nice blink dog or a protectar or something.
