Large creatures and cover vs ranged

The new geometry approach to cover is interesting but it seems to me that there is a problem when shooting a ranged weapon at a large creature: if it has even one of it's many squares slightly obscured, then it gets cover. Melee folks get to pick which square they are attacking, but ranged folks can't. Has their been any indication that this is an oversight? If not, has their been any justification for the discrepancy?

Here's the relevant stuff from the SRD:
To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC).
...
Any creature with a space larger than 5 feet (1 square) determines cover against melee attacks slightly differently than smaller creatures do. Such a creature can choose any square that it occupies to determine if an opponent has cover against its melee attacks. Similarly, when making a melee attack against such a creature, you can pick any of the squares it occupies to determine if it has cover against you.

My inclination would be to house-rule out that word in bold.

I believe you get to pick your target square when making a ranged attack - on page 139 of the PHB, under ranged attacks, it says
If your target (or the part of your target you’re aiming at, if it’s a big target) is at least 10 feet away from the nearest friendly character, you can avoid the –4 penalty, even if the creature you’re aiming at is engaged in melee with a friendly character.
So, if you can pick where on a large creature you are shooting to avoid the -4 shooting into melee penalty, you should determine cover based on the point you are shooting at also.
However - I can't find anything specifically stating that is true.

I agree with you on how it should be, but was trying to determine how it actually is (I try to keep my house rules to a minimum).
