LARPers and D&D players

Do you players of D&D ever play LARP?

I am absolutely sure this has been asked before, but I'd like to do a quick survey :)

How many of you have been LARPing?
If you have, did you like it or hate it?
If you haven't, do you like the idea or hate it?

Is it possible not to like it and not to hate it at the same time? :p

Just curiosity... one of our gamer has been LARPing on a few occasion, it seems it's quite popular in my region, but I haven't met anyone but her (or at least, no one confessed it has done it ;) ). She seems quite on the brink of quitting our D&D group for lack of time, but says she'll never quit LARPing, on the contrary she's been recently inviting me to join them for a try.

I admit I can't say I know much about it, but I've always imagined it quite, well... embarassing :p

I did it exactly once, at a con. I'm not even sure what system it was, but it was fantasy.

It was kind of fun, actually.

But after hearing horror stories from so many people about the kind of scum that shows up to most LARPs, I have zero interest in continuing.

And to all those who will post after me, yes, I'm sure your group is different. ;)

I tried LARPing a couple times. Once in a Vampire game, but I guess I'm just a little too country to play with the angsty goth crowd. Finding out that one guy (who played D&D with my group upon occasion) slept in a coffin...Too much for me.

The other time was to playtest a new system that didn't have a system. It was ok, but nothing more than playing cops and robbers. After that, I decided my roleplaying needed to be done with dice in my hand. ;)

I regularly play a local boffer larp in my area called Madrigal (www.larp.com/madrigal). Generally a good group of people, excellent plot, and very tight rule system.

The only 'theater' larping I do is at Intercon, a yearly convention in the Boston area. While the one-shot games there are generally pretty fun, they don't let you hit people. That saddens me. :)

Not even dead.

I think it would be fun to be an extra in a fantasy/medieval movie. I worked with a guy who was an extra in Braveheart. He said it was a blast.

not a death threat.

diaglo "doing a jig on Mystery Man's grave won't count as LARPing" Ooi

I voted "Never tried it, no interest" but then I remembered a brief foray into the SCA when I was in college. I attended a couple dinner parties when most everyone was "in character" to one degree or another, but there was no pre-defined plot or adventure. Would that count?

Regardless, I have no interest in doing so again. Like Fred I found a few of the people just a little too "into it." :)
