Leadership Feat

Ok I have a cleric that when he hits 6th level plans on taking the leadership feat. The cleric has a 16 charisma

This will grant him a 6th level cohort and because he has recently gained a small fortress about 6 1st level followers.

Two Questions.

1. Once the chort joins me how does he go up in experience? Does he go up in levels based off my leadership score? Or does he siphon off XP as a new party member?

2. What class are the 1st level followers? OR can I make them whatever class I want them to be?

Cohorts start at least a level below your character.

He siphons of 1/2 the experience of a full party member.

Make them any NPC classes you choose...

No, just warriors, experts, or commoners. Not aristocrats or adepts. I don't believe this is in the SRD, but it's in the DMG.

Note that the DMG's suggestion for how to calculate a "half share" is strangely wonky. They say to calculate XP as if the NPC had a full share, and then take half of his share and divide it among the PC's.

First, this actually leaves the NPC getting slightly less than half as much as a PC. Second, it takes two steps, and is just really strange. To me it makes much more sense to just figure out the number of "half-shares" in the party, allowing 2 for each PC and 1 for each NPC, and divide the total XP up into that number of "half-shares."

Agreed... that is what I do.

Or if you check the ELH you can see they can be any other NPC class (counts as 1 lor 2 evel higher), a PC class (counts as 2 or 3 levels higher) or a prestige class (counts as 5 levels higher).

There book contradicts itself on the level adjustment for NPC and PC classes.

Can you trade in a cohort is he becomes much lower level than the cohort level as determined by your leadership score would be?
I have not seen any rule that says either way.

But it says you can replace a "lost" cohort in 1d4 months.

I would treat it as a dead cohort but with no penalty to your leadership score.

Maybe there should be some kind of 'harsh employer' penalty...
