Leadership Feat

What if instead of advancing the Cohort with XP you just had him advance in level to remain at the right level to match the level determined by your leadership score. If your score ever drops so that he is higher level then he should be then he would remain at a static level until your leadership score went back up.

I have not seen any rule that says either way.

But it says you can replace a "lost" cohort in 1d4 months.

I would treat it as a dead cohort but with no penalty to your leadership score.

Hmm, do you just tell the "old" cohort, "Sorry man, you just suck." and kick him to the curb?

That sounds like a great adventure to me, the old cohort seeking revenge on his former mentor. "Hell hath no fury, like a cohort scorned!" (or something like that)

I shall remember this. ;)

Then he'd be gaining (probably) more experience then the rules allow... but it is up to your DM.

Just note that the level restriction is only there when he joins you... if he gets alot of experience and catches up to you level wise, then he doesn't leave. But I would suggest that he may leave once he is a higher level then you are. Unless there are other campaign stuff such as you are the king or something... Then you can have as many higher level cohorts as you wanted.

Yes but he will always remain at least one level lower than you are depending on your leadership score.

Not necessarily... if you decide to send him off on a mission that you don't go on, then he'll be getting exp. and you aren't... And if he is alone on this mission, then I'd be giving him full instead of half exp. So he can eventually catch up to you.

Yeah, I was under the impression your Leadership score was only important when you took the feat (or if you replaced a cohort). It doesn't say anything about losing a cohort if he gets higher level than you.

I didn't point this out before, but if you replace your cohort because he's too low level, you also should get the -2 penalty for causing the "death" of a cohort.

Very true if he was being run via regular experience. If instead you have his level slaved to your leadership score then he would lose out on any benefits from adventuring on his own.

So it would be a tradeoff.

I think that is too harsh. I would just say it takes them the 1d4 months to get a new cohort. Or, at worst, I would give them a -1 to the leadership.

Or else you would rather kill the cohort than release them from service (that way they wont come back to kill you later).
