The leadership feat can be used to great effectivness in a couple of situations.
In my campaign I only have to players so they both took the leadership feat as soon as they could and they both play two characters (their main character and their cohort) exp is awarded to each character individually.
As far as followers, if they do work they get exp. For example if the PCs send their followers out to take care of a kobold horde the followers get exp not the characters.
