legally scanned PDFs

I have to say, since you're willing to invest the time, and have the technology, it sounds like a worthwhile endeavor to me. And it's really reassuring to see someone going about it the right way.

My ONLY concern, security-wise, is attaching any financial information like a receipt, to a pdf that could be stolen or accidently distributed. But that really a pretty minor likelihood.

Scanning the book and keeping the book should be fine. Scanning the book and selling the same book is not okay.

Like I said I have 2 of the Square Book Cases, the tall one swaya a bit if you push on it from the sides, but the give is less than normal press board book cases. They both weigh a TON...

Do you really expect someone's going to come around and check your PC for illegal copies of RPG books? Music, DVD's and other high-profile stuff I could see - but RPG books, will the police even know what they're looking at?

Personally I don't like .pdf's, I have trouble reading them and like paper-books, so I don't bother with them. But if I could honestly be bothered and saw a use for converting them to .pdf's, I'd just do it and not stess about the legalities.

I know I'm going to get flamed for this about condoning illegal stuff (though I don't actually do this, I stress), but I really can't see the issue here.

Gaming is a social activity, unlike music or movies. You are only as strong as your weakest link.

I go to conventions and if I'm sitting at an open gaming table w/my laptop out there is a good chance that one of the special guests will hear that there is someone at the convention with PDFs of his book. (Which is probably ok if the book was released in pdf...)

I have enjoyed all the times I've gotten to play with designers at conventions. I'd prefer to have everything on the up and up if they ask questions.

For me the issue is proof of purchase. I've sat at a game table with my laptop out and had players rag on me because they didn't believe that my DRM WotC books were legal or 2nd edition books I bought (when it was run from WotC back in 1999[?] and rpgnow) were legal. It was pretty easy for me to convince them everything was ok because I had shelves of gaming books. If I get rid of my gaming books, I want to know I can prove it. It is an issue for me. The question has come up and I was able to solve it because I had the hard copies.

I’m not worried about the police. I’m worried about what my peers, my fellow gamers, will think.

It's not that I beleive people shouldn't be paid for their labour, it's just the lengths he's going to, to prove that it's his.
I don't have receipts for most of my gaming stuff, and even if I did, most of them just have a price on - they don't even have the name of the book - I don't know if it's different in America and you get proper invoices informing who you bought it off, who you are and the name of the book on there. But the few receipts I've got on there, either wouldn't prove anything, or would be so easy to mock up it's rendered pointless scanning them in and adding them to your .pdf.

In addition to this, the only .pdf I've bought (as I said I don't like the format), has absolutely no protection on it, nor evidence that I obtained it legally (though I suppose you could log into my account and see that it's on my history).

I'm sorry if I'm coming off offensive, and I'm very grateful to all those who come up with this material - but I just don't think anything the original poster could do would be legally satisfactory.
