Legend of the Five Rings RPG

Thaed

First Post
Is my group the only one that still plays Legend of the Five Rings RPG?

Third ed is out so probably not. L5R system is one of the great systems out there. The rule set works great for conversion to other game worlds.

Last year I ran a Star Wars game using the 1st Edition rule set. Works perfectly.

Force powers as Shugenja spells.

Force instead of the Void.

We've converted several other games to the rules as well.

Nothing like a fistfull of D10s.

No, your not the only one. In fact week after next we are starting a 3E game that should last 2 to 3 months, and we have 7 players.

I like my Crab with a side of Dragon.

Have you played 3E L5R before?

1E? 2E?

Which does your group prefer?

I like some of the changes they have made to the 3E game. I used some of the rules for my Star Wars game. (Based on 1E rules)

The biggest change I made for the Star Wars game was changing dice types. Rank 1 characters used D4. Rank 2 D6 Rank 3 D8
Rank 4/5 D10.

Kept the heroic flavor of the ability to do anything, but kept the Rank 1 Jedi from chopping down Darth Vader out of the gate.

In 1st Ed more than once, I've seen players kill the guy on the front of the book while still Rank 1 or so.

Any particular theme to your 3E campaign?

I still have it on my list to let the players play shadowlands PCs and attack the Kaiu wall.

My experience with 1E/2E L5R is how deadly the combat was. I liked the 5 rings attributes and the 8 sub attributes as it matches the feel of the setting. I was never a fan of d10 combat systems though in general.

Only real women and men need apply.

L5R is absolutely one of the deadliest games out there. In fact in the 1st ED book they discuss going to katana masters and asking them about combat.

The bottom line was in real life the combat was over quickly. Having a katana slice through you will leave a scar. Having it surgically placed in a vital location by a master means death.

The quick answer if it is too deadly, is just raising the wounds. Some variants we've allowed your earth * 5 or even 10 per wound level. Depends on the game.

There is nothing like the shout of "20" ringing across the table. But i have a special fondness for the d10.

May the blood on the floor be your enemies and not yours.

Now bow to your damiyo, now bow to your corner.

So what clan is the most popular amongst L5R players?

Is the choice mostly based on abilities or role-play?

Clans usually chosen are Crab, Dragon, and Scorpion. I think I am the only one to play a Crane. My daughter played a Phoenix Shugenja once.

I still play 3e L5R, and its a good change of pace from my 4e D&D play. Currently I play phoenix . . . big surprise there <looks at avatar> :)

Keia

I'd play more if there was more local interest. That, and the last couple years of setting direction have left a foul taste in my mouth, as more and more of the distinctly Asian elements get run roughshod over.

Also, Mantis for life. :)
