Earlier today, the world lost one of its most popular and beloved artists, Tim Hildebrandt, who made a name for himself with his fantasy and comic book artwork. His brother Greg, part of the legendary Brothers Hildebrandt, has issued the following statement:

June 11, 2006

Tim Hildebrandt has passed away. And, with him, so has an era.

Tim, 67, died today from complications due to diabetes. He is survived by his mother Germaine, twin brother Greg, sister Janie, wife Rita, son Charles, nieces Mary and Laura, and nephew Gregory.

Tim was an otherworldly artist. For 47 years, his captivating work fostered the dreams and fantasies of millions of fans, young and old.

Best known as part of the Brothers Hildebrandt team, Tim’s career transported him to—and through—many worlds. Technically speaking, Tim and Greg worked side by side. But their work together on such masterpieces as the original Star Wars poster and 70’s J.R.R. Tolkien calendars proved that their individual talents could coalesce seamlessly into one.

Tim was a wonderful man with a great sense of humor. While he loved and appreciated all forms of art, he had a particular passion for animation and illustration.

While he will be greatly missed by all of us who love him, we take comfort knowing that he will live on in the art that he created.

Anyone wishing to express condolences to Greg Hildebrandt can send them to:

Aw, crap.

:(

Heaven is getting better painted by the minute, it seems. David Sutherland III, Keith Parkinson, now Tim Hildebrandt...

Godspeed, Tim!

Oh, man.

Hard to think of the favorite artists of our youth passing away, but time keeps marching on its petty pace from day to day.

Hard to believe that we won't have more art from his hand and mind. Too soon, soon.

May he rest in peace and be rewarded for all the beautiful things he created for us. :)

I knew about Sutherland passing away, but not about Parkinson. Thanks for the update.

While the Brothers Hildebrandt were never amongst my favourite artists, I know many people who considered them amongst the very finest. For the interest they brought to illustrating Tolkein alone they deserve to be honoured.

Swift passage to the Furthest West, Tim.

The Brothers Hildebrandt's artwork is synonymous with my imagination whenever I read a fantasy novel or play Dungeons & Dragons. Their imagination had such a big impact on my own.

My thoughts and prayers are with Tim's family.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
