Pathfinder 1E Leif's Questing Knights, Veluna, Greyhawk - L10 Pfdr Rpg [IC 01] [Full]

As the Heroes rise and prepare themselves to begin this new quest, they each hear the priest's voice echo within their minds saying, "Remember --Look for the House without a Door and the Wall with neither Floor nor Roof. And take care my son."

"Mebe it's the house of... Whas hiz name?" Sozin points to the confused knight. "Mebe the wall is his shield or armor? Someone check his hard bits!"

Sir Pavel Hikaru

The knight has left your vicinity now, heading back to his post on the bridge. But something just doesn't seem right about the route he has chosen. In fact, he misses the bridge entirely and seems to be headed for a precipitous plunge (of some 30+ feet) to the rocks and the river below. His horse takes this in calm, straw-chewing stride, as if it is what they do every day about this time.

Initiative Order:

25 Sir Pavel Hikaru
19 Eldran Hawkshand
18 Johann Klaus
17 Ero Batzuen
15 Sozin
13 Yurei Cadivere
11 Hraln
01 Dontrius

Sir Pavel Hikaru serenely trots back in the general direction of the bridge, but that he is misaligned is obvious to the most casual observer, and will miss his mark by a good bit if permitted to continue on his present course.

OOC: Since no one is apparently monitoring this thread at the moment, we'll cut to the chase and say that Yurei successfully reaches Sir Pavel before he takes the plunge.

Yurei pulls up alongside Sir Pavel some twenty yards before the precipice. The bridge began some thirty yards behind their present position and they are about 8-10 feet below the level of the causeway now.

ATTACK!

View attachment 58001In fact, as Yurei approaches Sir Pavel, he at first thinks that he must have entered a patch of loose gravel or something, because his horses's hooves do not make their customary 'thud' and the impact of the steps feels a bit softer to him. A step-and-a-half later, and Yurei is certain that some mischief is afoot because the ground is moving! Sir Pavel, Johann, and Yurei are half-thrown/half-leap back onto solid ground as a GREAT creature stirs beneath them and rises from its thin covering of soil and rock -- the gargantuan worm is covered in chitinous plates of a light mauve color and its gaping maw is roughly of a size to swallow whole a fair-sized ox!

Everyone roll initiative! Map coming soon to this post.

You've already caught your first break in the worm's init: 1d20-2=1

Hraln continues to cast his protective spell on Sir Pavel and then draws a bow made of darkwood from the elaborate looking quiver on his back. As well, he attempts to discern what sort of creature this monster is.

[DM edit: Hraln vaguely recalls something about a colorful worm (purple? violet?) but he can only remember that they have tough chitinous hide.]

OOC: Initiative: 1d20+8=19 . Knowledge: 1d20+3=14, I am not sure what the DC should be to determine what creature type they are facing for things that are not obvious. He can only make DC 10 checks as knowledge skills are untrained, and the knowledge skill only mentions 10 + CR to determine abilities and weaknesses. But type is more basic than that. I would think DC 10 might be enough to at least say, "That is a magical beast," or "That is an aberration," but I need your ruling on how to handle this (or whether I should just metagame it) .

Combat

Scotley, what are Yurei's coordinates (or is he going straight up)? I'll allow him a one-half move since his foot got caught in his stirrup. (Or maybe that was his horse's way of saying, 'Don't leave me!')

Kaodi, what protective spell did Hraln cast on Sir Pavel? And you can go ahead and make an attack since the worm is so slow.

Map added to post # 245 below!

OOC: The same one I mentioned before, protect other. Also, I added a note/question to my above post about identifying creature type.

[DM: Answer put in post below, too.]
[DM2: There doesn't seem to be a spell called Protect Other in the PRD. Care to try again?]

Hraln quickly nocks his bow with a arrow made of cold iron and gives an exploratory shot, but it ineffectually plinks off the creatures heavy chitin.

Attack: 1d20+13=16, 1d8+3=5

Edit: Shield Other. My bad.

OOC: Shield Other. My bad.

"What sort of creature do you folks figure that is? Magical beast? Aberration?" calls out Hraln in question.

[DM edit: [sblock=spell description, Shield Other]DESCRIPTION
This spell wards the subject and creates a mystic connection between you and the subject so that some of its wounds are transferred to you. The subject gains a +1 deflection bonus to AC and a +1 resistance bonus on saves. Additionally, the subject takes only half damage from all wounds and attacks (including those dealt by special abilities) that deal hit point damage. The amount of damage not taken by the warded creature is taken by you. Forms of harm that do not involve hit points, such as charm effects, temporary ability damage, level draining, and death effects, are not affected. If the subject suffers a reduction of hit points from a lowered Constitution score, the reduction is not split with you because it is not hit point damage. When the spell ends, subsequent damage is no longer divided between the subject and you, but damage already split is not reassigned to the subject.

If you and the subject of the spell move out of range of each other, the spell ends.[/sblock]Are you SURE that you want to do that?]
