Sariel, LG eladrin warlord 12 (battle captain)

"Thank you anyway." She said. "Please let us or the Lord Warden know if you recall anything further or come across something new." And after exchanging goodbyes, she returned to the Lord Warden's manor.

She told Heise (and the Lord Warden and his Vizier, if they chose to listen in) what she had learned while she set up to cast the Detect Secret Doors ritual.

With the ritual's power aiding her searching, she examines the indicated area again, certain she'll find any hidden doors now.
OOC: That should give her a 49 on her perception check to find any secret doors in her line of sight. I don't know if what we're looking for will qualify as a secret door, but if it does, I think that ought to be good enough. Scratch 25 gp worth of ritual components.

Back at the Circle

Sariel now sees that the center of the teleportation circle glows expectantly as if it awaits final completion by an arcane focus, and also she sees a hidden panel in the wall facing the circle.

Behind the hidden panel Sariel sees a bejeweled object like a finial of some kind -- it has three gem-like stones at its heart, one blue, one red and one yellow, with smaller gem-like stones of purple, green, and orange seeming to 'radiate' outward from the center. The bottom of the finial is an octagonal projection that is flat on the bottom. Looking back at the circle in the floor, the adventurers see that there is a shallow octagonal depression, almost like a socket, in the center of the circle that, for some reason, none of them had noticed before. Beside the bejeweled object is a carefully folded sheet of vellum.

I'm almost sure what this is. Sariel thinks, removing the bejeweled object and the sheet of vellum. She unfolds the sheet and examines it, expecting to see a ritual formula on it.

Sariel sees a diagram showing the finial pleaced in the center of the circle, and below the diagram is a ritual formula.

OOC: Insight, hafrogman sorry for the extended sequence of pretty much back and forth between Sariel and the GM, but she's the only ritualist we've got and the knowledge-skill girl...
Not to wanting to accidentally activate anything, Sariel carefully examines the ritual trying to determine what it does.

hafrogman

Visitor
Heise peers into the panel with Sariel and takes a look at the "key". As the eladrin pulls out the elaborate object, he turns to Durn and shrugs.

"At least we were looking in the right spot."

Then he pauses for a moment as he watches Sariel consider the parchment.

"Out of curiosity . . . if this ritual is the path to Argent. What happens if the circle at the other end isn't in quite as good condition?"

drothgery, hafrogman is showing you how to keep the others involved here -- just have Sariel speak to them, tell them what she is thinking and ask for their opinions.

"It should either work or not, if it works like the linked portal ritual I usually use." She says. "If the other end is too damaged, we'd just be out the ritual components and wouldn't go anywhere. Though I'm not sure I want to try casting this without a good idea of what it's supposed to do..."
OOC: There's actually nothing in the text of Linked Portal about what happens if the circle you're trying to teleport to is damaged; Sariel should know, though...

OOC: Yes, agreed, if anyone really knows this. Of course, you're assuming that this circle placed by the torrians is exactly like the teleportation circles that you're familiar with, and I think we all know what is said about those who assume.... On the other hand, Sariel may be able to learn something from a more in-depth inspection of this circle, and I think she may have done that, but I can't remember what she got for the skill check.

OOC: What I meant with my disclaimer is that Sariel, being lawful good if intensely curious, would not say anything other than what she believed to be true here. Obviously she doesn't know for sure if this ritual would work the same way, though she thinks it would be likely.

She got a 31 on her initial Arcana check to examine the circle way back here: http://www.enworld.org/forum/5988817-post25.html . One thing she wanted to know in addition to the special properties of this circle and what exactly this mystery ritual does is whether it could be used as a destination for a standard linked portal ritual.

31, hmmm. That's plenty. Sorry I needed all of the posts made since that check for some background development before I was ready to go.

Sariel can see the destination's name coded cunningly into the outer ring of runes of the circle -- ARGENT. The ritual formula is just a slight variant of a typical 'teleportation circle ritual,' and Sariel doubts whether the very small discrepancies would make any real difference.

[sblock=The Differences]
The discrepancies betweeen what's on the scroll and what Sariel knows is mostly due to the age of the language used -- "thither" instead of "there," "hither" instead of "here," "thee" or "thou" instead of "you," and that kind of thing.

"It looks like this ritual should take us to Argent." Sariel said. "Unless you'd rather walk?" She asked the others.

Hearing no objections, Sariel transcribes the pattern of the circle into her notes, copies the ritual into her ritual book, and begins to cast it, placing the focus approriately.
OOC: Linked portal requires an arcana check to determine how long the gate stays open, though she'd need help or external penalties to not get a result in the 20-39 range for three rounds; no way for me to know if it's the same for this one, but rolled the dice anyway

OOC: Let's not assume. Let's let everyone who is in the circle confirm so, specifically. ;)

OOC: Let's try this again. hafrogman and Insight , what do you want to do?

I know that Insight has recently just withdrawn from many of his games and I suspect that this one would have been first on that list. I have no knowledge of hafrogman's current whereabouts, but I have little hope that he will remain here long. Unfortunately, drothgery, that, I believe leaves you as the sole survivor.

If you want to continue, we can either attempt to recruit replacement players or you can take on the other characters as co-equal PCs or as henchmen/servants/employees of your PC, and you could even choose any of the characters to be your main PC.

Just spitballing here, so any other ideas are welcome.
