Does anyone have gritty, more realistic ways to run hand-to-hand melee combat?
I know people prefer to think of martial arts as seen in the recent movies, and that's all well and good. However, being a huge fan with an interest in martial arts for a good many years now, I'd like to see a more realistic form of fighting in my games. Some examples would be..
High Kicks look good in a number of movies, but if you get into a fight with anyone in real life with any type of real martial skill and try to kick him in the face, the chances are better than average that he can either deflect, or worse-case, catch your leg and then crush your knee into pudding (ouch!).
Where is the DnD rule for slamming someone? Rushing someone, wrapping both of your arms around one of their upper thighs and lifting them up.. then moving over toward a wall or tree or some other such large object and then dropping/slamming said grappled opponent onto their poor freakin' head?
Damaging? You bet your sweet behind it is. Perhaps not as painful or mortally wounding as being run-through by a longsword, but having been in a few fights myself, I'd have to say the #2 thing I would NOT want to happen would be that maneuver right there. Landing with your full body weight, plus their's, onto your head/neck/shoulder, a combo of the three, or worse yet hitting all three evenly pretty much ends your chances of winning that encounter in real life (and possibly of walking or being able to eat without someone's help).
The #1 thing I wouldn't want to happen would be bitten in a.. sensitive area, but that's neither here nor there...
So, what could I do for more gritty, real life hand-to-hand combat rules? I'm not wanting to outshine the good ole' tried n' true melee combat with weapons, but I've wanted to add a pit-fighter storyline somewhere in the mix and if he PCs would like to get involved rather than it being just a side-story thing, then I'd like to be ready.
(To see a human being get slammed on his head in the manner in which I described, check out a UFC Fighter named Matt Hughes. This guy is my hero! I'm sure there are some good places online to see one or two of his more brutal fights.)
