Lesser Metemagic Rod of Chain Spell

First Post
Our party approaching 10th level came across a rod of lesser chaining. I don't see a lot of great uses, and actually seems to have been forgotten about by whoever has it. The chaining feat has a lot of restrictions IIRC which rule out a lot of spells.

We have a Favored soul with reach spell feat, a warmage, and a wizard. Are there any 3rd or lower spells that seem especially suitable?

There are a few spells that the wizard could potentially get some good use out of Chaining, such as Blindness/Deafness, Tasha's Hideous Laughter.

Greater Magic Weapon and Keen Edge. :)

But also Hold Person, Suggestion, Dispel Magic, Command Undead, and similar spells.

Dispel Magic is probably the best of them, as anything that allows a save becomes laughable when Chained (I'm going to have to disagree with you there on Chained Hold Person Thanee. In 3.5 Hold Person is barely worth casting as is, with the -4 to the save from Chain, it's just bad...)

I really like the idea of chaining the buffing spells, you can buff the whole party with a 2nd or 3rd level spell. Better yet with 2nd or 3rd spell known for the favored soul and she's an NPC Buffing machine.

Dispell magic and tasha's are also great ideas I wouldnt have thought of.

Thanks for the ideas. Consider it passed to the favor soul.

Will the rod work with a reach cure serious?
If you take cure serious (3rd) and apply reach spell it takes a 4th level slot and satisfies the single target and greater than touch condition of chain spell. I believe it's still a 3rd level spell for DC and the 'lesser' part of the rod. The thing I don't know is what the effect of the 'if the spell does not do damage' paragraph of chain spell implies. Do the pc's heal half as much, do they heal full, but only changes the DC to resist (which they wouldn't)?

Yep, I would think that works.

As for the Hold Person... the chaining is basically for free (here)... it's better than a single target Hold Person, even taking away a single action from a single opponent other than the original target might be worth it. ;)
