D&D 5E Let's break the Ring of Spell Storing

Thinking about the interaction with the fact it stores spell levels and uses spell levels, but you can overpower spells by using more powerful slots. So a Caster places a 1st level spell using a 9th level slot, I mean it is still a first level spell.

Edit - someone else already pointed out the issue I was mentioning. Nevermind.

The ring must be attuned, and you can only attune three items at one time. So if your non-caster wants to use this ring for shenanigans various and sundry, he can have the ring plus a magic weapon and a suit of armor (for example), and that's it. No ring on the other hand, no magic boots, etc.

Also remember that attunement takes some time to execute (an entire short rest, to be precise). Trading off the ring among party members may not always be a practical option.

And finally, the person casting the spell to be stored is giving up precious resources until the next rest. That's all well and good before the adventure begins, but it becomes more and more burdensome if you have a campaign where you are using a lot of spells with little downtime. This is particularly true of the warlock-only spell hex.

There are lots of magic items that don't require attunement, including +X weapons and armor, wands, and boots of striding and springing, according to the DM basic rules.

Yes, you have to be attuned to use the spells stored in the ring. But the entry specifically calls out that ANYONE can cast a spell while touching it in order to store a spell. It doesn't need to be the attuned owner.

I love really flexible items like the ring of spell storing. very impressed with the previews of DMG so far.

Player: "I ready my action to grab the NPC's hand if he casts a spell.".
DM: "Ok, he casts Magic Missile at you."
Player: "I roll my grab, yes, success. I grab his hand and store his spell into my Ring of Spell Storing. Woo Hoo!"
DM: "Wait. What?"

Just WOW, you so miss read that if you have to be attuned to use it then if your not you can not, plane and simple. so anyone can use it fighter thief ect as long as they are attuned, that is what it means. Some just need it spelled out for them to understand things

Ummm... ;)

Remember too, that while one-off effects on non-casters are interesting, the ring will need to be refilled by a caster expending precious slots. Great for down time though.

My guess it will be fairly easy for a spellcaster to scrape together a few spell slots to recharge an expended ring at the end of a day of hard adventuring. Harder than in previous editions, maybe, but the flexible nature of the slots now makes it easy to put your preferred spells into the ring with any slot the caster has left. It may not always be your favorite configuration, but it can probably get pretty close on a regular basis.
