This.

.24 works for both the magnitude of change (less than 3.5) and the year.

Also jumping to .5 implies the edition is half over. Which may not be the case.
I'd say, IF all proposed changes had found their way into the new books, 5.5 would have been more or less warranted.

I am speaking of:
  • unified subclass structure
  • unified spell lists
  • warlock to half caster

Those are changes to the underlying structure of the game.

We still have a few things that are still there:
  • unified subclass entry at level 3
  • redo of grappling

Agreed.

.1 for weapon mastery, which is big.
.1 for for all the other little core rule changes (potions as a bonus action, grapple, ect)
.04 for all the class changes. Where 96% of the features are the same.

Look, we are all going to call it whatever we individually want, right up until the time WotC starts using their own "official" designation. Because at that point most of the general gaming populace who aren't all persnickety like we folks here are will just go along with what WotC says. Cause it doesn't actually matter whatsoever.

So just use what you want for now and stop trying to make 'fetch' happen.

I'm just calling it D&D. The only time it will mater to me to distinguish is pre session zero, as I explain to my players that they can build PCs using either the 2014 or 2024 PHB and that if they choose the 2014 they can only use it and the two guides to everything for character building, spells and feats.

That is ok.

It was @Gradine who stated that it has to be 5.5 because it is, as a fact. So I answered that it is just her opinion, not a fact.

So in my opinion it is about half the way to 5.5, but nearer to 5.0 than to 5.5, but not much.

So 5.24 is perfect.
