[Lets choose] the ENworld un-word of 2008

Oh and the German un-word 2008 was "notleidende Banken" / "suffering banks".

Hopefully that's not in regards to Cam Banks. *ducks!* :D

I think there was something like that in the US recently, and I think they chose "green" (for the green movement, not the color). Though I would quickly have added "bailout." But I digress.

"Balance" has been a buzz-phrase that has irked me for years, as it was often equated to fun. Not that the two are exclusive, just that they are not necessarily synonymous. I heard it constantly from designers and fans alike, so much so that I got sick to death of the word. However, I'd place this one in prior years. I haven't heard it as much lately.

I'll echo Echohawk (*rim shot*), and go with "edition." Truth be told, I was really not that enthused with visiting EN World's forums for a while as that phrase kept coming up constantly.

Although maybe we should expand that to be "edition wars." (See my sig-line for my thoughts on all that.)

Because really this word is never used correctly when it comes to rpg's yet I have seen it used so often in the edition wars, it's just become irksome.

The phrase "It's not D&D"

Your's must have a misprint... :)

Seconded. You can not care for a given edition. That doesn't make it magically "not D&D". If the company that has rights to it publishes it, and is says "Dungeons & Dragons" on the cover, then its D&D. Even if it doesn't have/includes your favorite/least favorite mechanic or component.

"Douche." Or "douchebag."

(And for those of you who think people are misusing "simulationist" or "verisimilitude," your agenda is showing like a geek version of plumber's crack. And just as welcome.)

I would have to go with "balance" as well.

There are many opinions as to what is and is not "balanced". And as a word that implies an empirical or quantifiable relationship, its certainly being used as justification for some very subjective statements and decisions.
