So we have heard about something called Combat Advantage. We know about the One Chart to Rule them All. We have been told that Grapple in 4e will be very streamlined & easy.
So let's try and guess ways they might do this. How does SWSE deal with it-- could that be a clue? Let's also think outside the box- ways we could shave down the grapple process by a few steps.
I'll get the ball rolling:
When you initiate a grapple, you roll a STR or DEX check vs. your opponent's STR or DEX score. Feats / class abilities will give a bonus to this check or the target's score. If you succeed, the opponent is held.
If you have an opponent held, at the begining of your turn, you can attack him w/ an unarmed attack or tiny weapon AND you have Combat Advantage vs. that opponent (you are winning the grapple).
People outside the grapple have Combat advantage to hit either person in the grapple.
A held opponent can do three things.
1. Attack the grappler w/ a tiny weapon / unarmed attack (possibly w/ some set penalty-- combat disadvantage perhaps?)
2. Escape the grapple-- You make a STR or DEX check vs. opponent's STR or DEX score-- plus any bonus they have vs. grapples. If you succeed, you are no longer held & have a move action left.
3. REVERSE the grapple. As an escape, but you must make it by a set ammount (5 perhaps 10) If you succeed, your opponent is held.
