Level Advancement Rate in 3e

My feeling as a GM is, I was worried that the 3e advancement rate was too fast, and sometimes still worry about this, but really looking back on my campaign over the past 8 months the rate has been about 1 level/month, which hardly seems excessive. The one gripe I do have is that at the mid levels, around 3rd-8th, CR 1 (or less) monsters seem to provide too much XP relative to higher CRs - a troll definitely seems undervalued compared to a bunch of CR 1/2 hobgoblins, for instance. I'd like to see a reduced scale for CR 1- monsters, and suggestions on awards for PCs of level 9+ - I don't much like the way CR 1 at lvl 8 gets you 200 XP, but at 9th gets you nothing. Maybe something like (for CR 1):

1st-3rd: 300
4th: 240
5th: 160
6th: 80
7th: 40
8th: 20
9th: 10
10th: 9
11th: 8
12th: 7
13th: 6
14th: 5
15th: 4
16th: 3
17th: 2
18th: 1
19th+: 0

These people are bragging about who they put first on their ignore list, and gleefully writing negatively of the person as if they're not present to read those words. Sounds like they have an axe to grind.

hong, you must have hit some egos where it hurts. :D

Somehow, rounser, I can't possibly imagine hong being hurt by anything I have to say.

PS

Or else:

1st-3rd: 300
4th: 300
5th: 250
6th: 225
7th: 200
8th: 150
9th: 10
10th: 9
11th: 8
12th: 7
13th: 6
14th: 5
15th: 4
16th: 3
17th: 2
18th: 1
19th+: 0

This is half what CR 2 is worth, up through level 8. For levels 9+, I tend to think that the 12th level Wizard who destroys the attacking orc army should get _something_, it'll still take him some effort (unlike the 20th level Wizard), but this is obviously just a suggestion to firm up the DMG's discussion of ad hoc awards.

I can just see Hong weeping bitter tears of grief at the discovery that not everybody loves him... it must be a terrible shock to the poor little mite.

But in any case, thanks to Storminator I no longer have to see _what_ he thinks! Hurray! :) :) :)

One of my players, a mathmetician, is working on a conversion of Challenge Ratings to give 1st edition style advancement.

This is important to those of us that prefer to run 1st edition modules, so that the characters advance at the right pace.

When he's done, I'm sure he'll post it.

I'll admit that responding to feeble arguments with catty snideness isn't the best way to go about things. I'm weak -- feed me a perfect straight line and I just have to go for it.

Thanks for your contribution, though. Very insightful.

Cool. How is he determining assumptions for magic items and wealth and so on? As far as I recall, there were no guidelines for those things in 1e.

If there were, I paid no attention. Too busy chasing the Queen of the Demonweb Pits around, I guess.

Has this really been important? I've been running my Temple of Elemental Evil conversion, and the characters already advance at the right pace. I don't understand what the issue is.

The nicest thing about the 3E experience rules is that by and large they are self-correcting. If the PCs are too high level for an adventure, they get less xp, so they don't advance as quickly. Once they get to the point where they match the adventure, they then advance at the correct pace. It's been pretty good for me to see.
