Actually this reminds me of DC heroes. In that game if you rolled doubles, you got to re-roll and keep summing. Thus, enough doubles and a kid takes out Superman with a popsicle stick- or Luke blows up the Death Star.
Or RoleMaster. I know someone who attacked as Nuzgul as a 1st level character and got an obscene number of rerolls. Came out as an instant kill. That is until the DM asked, "So, was it the _bow_ that was magic, or the _arrow_?"
