Leveling too fast?

Ok, so I went out and picked up KotS today and a question came up while playing.

It takes 1000 XP to level. The first encounter rewarded us with like 475 XP or something. Is this XP divided up amongst each party memebr, or does each PC get the full total? If so then we hit 2nd level after the 2nd encounter!

As an aside I'm really liking the system so far. I'm so ready to make my own character. :D

Well, it is supposed to take around 10 Encounters to level. So I believe that is divided amongst the party. Since 475 divided by 5 (since 5 is the norm for 4e) is 95. So that means about 9 more encounters to level.

It's supposed to be divided. You're supposed to level after roughly 10 appropriately leveled encounters. So, what's basically 500 exp, divided by 5 players, is around 100 each--9 more fights to go! Well, thereabouts anyway.

Experience is divided by all winning participants.

Are you sure it's not divided by all participants, so long as the monster is defeated? In the Quests excerpt, they went on about how even characters who aren't present get XP when a Quest is completed, so long as they participated in the Quest. It seems like they would want to follow through with that sentiment elsewhere.

Edit: Ah, you're probably referring to all participants on the winning side.

Yeah. Unfortunately, you'll still be getting the amount your PC is supposed to get—if the DM is playing by the rules. Sorry 'bout that. :D (Not really.)

High note: If you die, you still get the XP and can benefit from it if you come back to life.

Y'know...

The new alignment rules are pretty lax in 4E. And death itself has been reduced to the equivalent of a bad hangover or something. I wonder how long it will take for players to start turning on each other at higher levels, just to hog the XP.

Warlock: "Man, that dragon took out all my dailies and most of my HP. I've got 3 HP left."
Rogue: "Same here...I'm out of healing surges and I'm at 5 HP."
Warlord: "Crap, I'm out of healing surges too, and I've only got 3 hp left. How about some healing, cleric?"
Cleric: "Sorry, but I'm unaligned." <flame strike>
