If you actually enjoy shooters with pretty interesting stories (or interesting concepts with a shooter), try the 3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. They're set in the zone of exclusion around Chernobyl. Yes, it's a magical treatment of radiation, but considering you enjoyed Mass Effect, pseudoscience shouldn't be much of a problem in terms of your enjoyment. Metro 2033 is along the same lines. Really damn interesting Russian games. Buggy, but solid story concepts and pretty good execution. And if you get a kick out of exploration, you'll really enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Metro 2033 is much more linear in that respect.
I've been playing through Book 2 of Eschalon, which is an old-school style RPG (2D, stat progression very similar to D&D) with a good deal of depth and an intriguing storyline if you can hold back froth at beginning with an amnesiac character.
They're all PC games. I don't think any have been released to console, though I could very well be wrong. I'm sort of surprised that you found The Witcher to be so tedious and apparently didn't get much out of Dragon Age: Origins. You're not going to find another game like the Mass Effect games. Personally, I prefer the first game to the second, and I'm sure I'll prefer the second to the third.
Have you tried Amnesia: The Dark Descent?
