LF Video Game Recommendations

If you actually enjoy shooters with pretty interesting stories (or interesting concepts with a shooter), try the 3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. They're set in the zone of exclusion around Chernobyl. Yes, it's a magical treatment of radiation, but considering you enjoyed Mass Effect, pseudoscience shouldn't be much of a problem in terms of your enjoyment. Metro 2033 is along the same lines. Really damn interesting Russian games. Buggy, but solid story concepts and pretty good execution. And if you get a kick out of exploration, you'll really enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Metro 2033 is much more linear in that respect.

I've been playing through Book 2 of Eschalon, which is an old-school style RPG (2D, stat progression very similar to D&D) with a good deal of depth and an intriguing storyline if you can hold back froth at beginning with an amnesiac character.

They're all PC games. I don't think any have been released to console, though I could very well be wrong. I'm sort of surprised that you found The Witcher to be so tedious and apparently didn't get much out of Dragon Age: Origins. You're not going to find another game like the Mass Effect games. Personally, I prefer the first game to the second, and I'm sure I'll prefer the second to the third.

Have you tried Amnesia: The Dark Descent?

Sorry, I assumed everyone knew that Mass Effect and most of the games I mentioned in the OP were only ever released on PC so therefore, I was only asking about PC games.

The only reason I have an XBOX 360 was to play Mass Effect when it was first released. Now that I've gotten used to playing on a 47 inch flat screen, I have a tough time playing on my 21 inch monitor. (most of the games you listed, I only played on the XBOX)

A friend of mine got me playing Wizards 101 for a while. It was shamefully addicting and easy to learn.

If you don't mind a lack of graphics, there are still a ton of MUDS (text only online games) out there. New Worlds Alteraan is worth a look http://www.ateraan.com/ or you could take a look at the list of games at mudconnect.com: The Mud Connector - Mud and RPG game index, mudlist and reviews or at Top Mud Sites - MUD and RPG Rankings - Mud Database, RPG & MUD Forums, MUD Articles, MUD Reviews

Thief doesn't seem like an RPG at all but definitely looks like my kind of game; rogues are my traditional favourite class in any fantasy setting.

It's not an RPG at all, it's a first person stealth game.

[/I]PC/360/PS3: Assassin's Creed 1, Assassin's Creed II and even Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood:

If you have never really given these titles a try, my guess is that you can find the first AC I and AC II as used games for the console of your choice for Pretty Damn Cheap.

Or watch for sales on Steam for the PC versions, like today for example.

I must add that while I liked the first game, it has some significant issues.

They're all PC games.

Metro 2033 got a console release, 360specifically.

And the sequel was recently confirmed.

Which is why I wrote, "I don't think any have been released to console, though I could very well be wrong." But given that Kzach is a PC gamer, an XBox release isn't relevant to OP.

I am glad to know it's getting a sequel. Metro was kickass.

To the contrary, Mass Effect 1 was produced as a Xbox 360 Exclusive for nearly its first year. The port of the title to the PC was not even done by BioWare and was farmed out to a third party developer. As a consequence, Mass Effect 1's PC version is a bug-ridden piece of crap compared to the 360 version (same applies to Jade Empire, for that matter).

If you don't even have a 360, keep your eyes peeled for a sale and pick one up for $149 and grab a cheap used 360 hard drive. You are missing a lot of games my friend -- for no good reason. I was in PC game development and I do love PC games, but the market has, for the most part, moved on. I'm not saying abandon PC Games, but you are missing out on a lot of games for a comparatively minor hardware investment. Frankly, I'd get a PS3, too, and for the same reason. Plus, the PS3's media streaming and Blu-Ray capabilities makes it a good investment for more than gaming.

Electronic gaming is not a zero-sum game. :)
