LG Drow Character?

As has been said above, it's up to your DM to determine whether one is possible or not. If he or she says no, then that's really all you need to know.

Now, I created a good drow wizard many moons ago. He was a normal Chaotic Evil drow (2nd edition) magic user, and worked for his family as a house mage. He was 9th level, and had some respect in the family, and was responsible for identifying any magical items that his family's hunting parties captured. The DM and I determined that the drow were all using the old 1st edition Identify spell, but he was able to secure a newer version of the spell (2nd edition version) that was easier to cast and gave more information.

Well, a hunting party came back with some slaves and magical items, which were dumped in his lap. He set all his traps and locks to protect him while he was "out of it" after casting the spell, and went to work. One of the items was a ring, which when he placed it on his finger to cast the spell, he received a massive mental shock that knocked him unconscious. When he woke up, he found many gaps in his memory, including loss of spell knowledge. He rightly figured out that the ring was cursed, and it was fused to his finger, but it's magic was expended. He was now the equivalent of 5th level in magical knowledge.

Slowly he began to find how his society behaved to be intollerable, but he knew to hold his tongue or be killed... he didn't know what had happened to him, so he began to do research, all the while using his stored scrolls and magical items to protect himself and keep up the pretense that nothing was wrong. In his research he discovered a type of magical item that the drow had used to their own benefit in the past... "Conscience-Altering Magic". The ring had made a fundamental change in his moral and ethical mindset. (He was now lawful good rather than chaotic evil... it was a ring of alignment change, and my theories on alignment at the time dealt a lot with conscience, or lack of conscience. He dropped in level based on the ideas at the time of losing an experience level for changing alignment. One level for each alignment he went through to get from Chaotic Evil to Lawful good.)

He tried to exist as best he could in drow society, but he found that he had to make another shift in his alignment in order to survive, and lost another level, changing to Neutral Good, which is when he joined the group that I was playing with at the time.

Now, with all these level losses... it wasn't explicit in the rules, but it was used just for the purpose of telling his story. It made more sense that he was a higher level wizard to be in charge of identifying magic, and the group always started at 4th level, so he had to lose some levels. He got to keep his 9th level spellbook to compensate for the hardship he'd have to put up with on the surface, which came in handy as he regained his levels.

It worked, and yes, at the time I was inspired by Drizzt, but I'm leery of good aligned drow these days, even though I liked that character. It's just being over-done these days.

GM says no then no is the answer.

If I was you I would write him up- origin, life and why is he LG, where does he come from and why is he the way he is.

Personally I'd like to see that played, I think it would be cool

Oh, and FWIW- I see no reason why a Drow couldn't be LG. Just because the MM says so- so what.

My usual jokes about good-aligned drow aside...

Ask your DM if there are CE hill/mountain/shield dwarves in his world. (Not necessarily as PCs, but in general. Maybe he doesn't like evil PCs, for all I know.)

Point out that LG drow aren't even as atypical as CE dwarves, looking at the races' typical alignments (NE->LG is less of a change than LG->CE).

If necessary, ask about LE elves (non-drow) as well.

If evil PCs are okay, also point out that a LG drow can work better in a team than a CE dwarf (or LE elf).

I think that the answer is, in your DM's setting, No. Telling your DM that the people on the Enworld boards said you could do it would probably just irritate him. It would me.

Wow, I didn't expect such a huge response. Now I have to pick what I need to reply to. As far as the ENWorld boards go....I don't think it would annoy him, but I may be wrong. He's the leader of the DMF here, so he's likely to take stock in the advice of fellow board members. We'll see.

In all honesty, if you wanted to play a drow anyway, unless it is a part of an underground setting, I think you would pay out the nose for having a LG drow. Not like he can hide up above ground and still retain everything that he has as a drow...

However, if you made an elf that might LOOK like a drow (maybe darker skin or white hair that makes you look that way when you wear black), that might be better suited and might make for interesting plot twists.

I don't know, I tend to play very pronounced characters so I'm not sure how that could work for me. But the plot twists might be interesting. Something to consider, anyways. Thanks!

If you think it is worth a shot and not likely to annoy the DM, you might want to look at the prestige class "Infused". I'm sorry I don't have a link for it, but I'm pretty sure that when reading the class even evil characters can be infused to try and convert an eveil being onto the side of good.

Wait. Sorry, I'm still fairly new to the game. Infused class?

Thanks for the huge response.

Is it possible to create a LG Drow?

Absolutely yes. You can "create" whatever you like, as long as it fits in your campaign according to the DM (and to some extent, even to other player's opinions). Since your DM says no, he probably has his own idea about the campaign world, and you should accept them.

IOW, a second opinion wouldn't help :) even if 300 ENWorlders tell you that your DM should allow it, you shouldn't push him to do so.

Hay, it could happen. That's what a helm of alignment change is all about. For those interesting plot twists. No gypsies needed. ;)

And then later on, another player will bring in his own drow-with-a-soul character and it will be cooler and much more loved than yours and you can throw a fit and refuse to play that character ever again. :D

But seriously, the Helm of Opposite Alignment is iffy in my book. I mean, in third edition, actions determine alignment, not the other way around. Unless in the case of the Helm, that is. It's not neat. :)

I would say yes but you will have to work with your DM on the how and whys, polymorph, reincarnation or being raised by halflings who found you on an altar to some spider goddess. Define why you are lawful and make it a roleplaying story element. ;)
