LG? Might as well play a paladin.

A ways back, when discussing making a character for a campaign, I mentioned making a LG fighter. The other guys said, "You might as well play a paladin, then."

How often do you see someone play a Lawful Good non-paladin? Especially a LG fighter.

Don't know if this counts, but there's been a couple of people who played LG monks and psychic warriors in our group. I could definitely see the point behind playing a LG fighter instead of a paladin, though.

It depends on the group. In pick-up games and at cons, LG seems to be about the third most common alignment I see. (The first two are CG and CN.)

In my regular campaign, nobody has been LG for a year or more of real time, but that's because of the group dynamics. Our very first 3E party was entirely chaotic, except for one paladin; we did a lot of lying to him and telling secrets in Draconic, so he wouldn't know about all the dishonorable stuff we were up to. Those characters have since been retired, but now everyone is leery of LG because they don't want to be kept out of the planning loop.

I'm playing a 20th level dwarf rogue/fighter who is lawful good. He's not a thief -- he's a troubleshooter. You'd just better hope your name ain't Trouble. :)

KidCthulhu's character in Sagiro's game is a LG fighter/cleric.

I was about to say that even a LG Fighter/Cleric could be very different from a Paladin. Above and beyond being simply LG, Paladins have a calling to set an example and be champions to their cause.

Another thing is that Fighters and Fighter/Clerics have a lot more flexibilty to powergame. :]

I've been reading too many of Pratchett's Discworld books dealing with the Ankh-Morpork Watch these days...that character just screamed Dwarf Watch member to me.

One player in a game last year played a LG Wizard - who switched to Paladin. :)
A very strange Paladin of Mystra, I might add, who for instance had no problem with some undead, because "Necromancy is as valid a school of magick and part of the Weave as any other, and thus indeed, something to be defended" so long as no one else's soul is harmed in the making of them. He, of course, promptly got screwed over by a lich shopkeeper in Zhentil Keep. (Yes, it was me. :o )

P.S. Just because you're Lawful Good doesn't mean you get "the call" to be a Paladin. ;)

We've got a 12th level fighter that's not a paladin in one of our ongoing campaigns - at times he's played him more lawful than good, but still LG. Of course, his 13th level is probably going to end up a Pal level (because of several in-game developments - only one of which is based on the fact that his Will save is nothing short of awful and he needs some Divine Grace but quick).

Aww, man! I just always assumed I could give 1-800-PAL-ADIN a call and they'd send me out a free start-up kit as long as I was LG.

Way to dash a guy's hopes and dreams there, Torm. Jeesh.

:p
