Libris Mortis Cover

I don't think it's more cartoonish that the Draconomicon, just a different kind of cartoon.

And for what it's worth, I like the cover...

Ditto...
I may prefer the Draco cover more (Hey, it's friggen LOCKWOOD!), but the LM cover is still pretty good, just very different stylistically.

The Codex Anathema cover on the other hand... :uhoh:

Another agreeing, except I also like the Codex Anathema. Its nice to see other styles, and yeah, Lockwood is great...but you can't have just him doing EVERYTHING. That also gives no chance for newer artists to do things. Its hard enough as it is! :)

Well, I've only seen really small pics of Codex's cover, but even then, it looks like a very bad Easley cover to me.

Well, I prefer the cover for Codex Anathema over Libris Mortis - at least what I'm seeing at Amazon. I can't find anything about Anathema at the Wizards site. Neither is as eye catching as draconomicon. (squirming and funny noises, "juicy nut-meat" indeed - LOL!)

I don't buy a book primarily for the cover, but it is one of the things that will draw me to pull it off the shelf in the first place if I'm just browsing.

Somehow the Anathema picture reminds me of the 1E style - manula of the planes, wilderness guide, some of the adventure modules, etc.

Ok, so I was too curious and I went down and checked. The artist is Tom Kidd (who actually has been around for a while, just not in D&D to my knowledge.) The piece really looks better as a painting; as a book it's cut in half to be front and back covers.

This is a bit of an odd piece for him, here's his website and it's a bit hard to see how this fits in with the rest of his work. Check out the Gnemo stuff (it's an anagram of Gnome! What could it mean!?!) for instance; I think that's the stuff that he really enjoys doing. Could this commission just have been a payday to him? I hope not.

It's definitely the final cover. WotC wouldn't keep a placeholder this long. Beside, it has made a while since I have last seen a WotC placeholder cover. Seems they do not use them anymore.

I really like the feel of the covers and I think the intent was to invoke nostalgia for the old material. This cover has everything that a 1e cover would have from garish yet workable colours to liquid forms contrasted by sharp shapes that jump out at you. There is a sense that someone with a twisted mind may have done this, like a Pickman or Van Gogh (but not so extreme)

I truly truly hate this cover! I mean really, this stinker sucks so bad that the Hoover company could make a new model cleaner from it. I fully plan on rebinding my copy just so I won't have to glance at that moronic Lich that looks like he sneezed while eating a reindeer. The sheer fact that Wotc would let this sewage go to market shows just how little they respect their customers these days. A really big let down after the excellence of the Draconomicon.........Raaagggghhh!!!!!

Except it's not. I've got the book in front of me (my preciousssss).

It's almost the final cover, but there are a few differences--the primary one being the lich/necromancer/whatever he is. He doesn't have those tentacle musache thingies on the actual book. It's a much better looking piece of art, IMO. Is it so much better that those of you who hate the pic online will like it? Probably not. As I said, it's mostly the same piece. But it is better.
