Libris Mortis Cover

The sheer fact that Wotc would let this sewage go to market shows just how little they respect their customers these days.

You know, you're welcome to your opinion, but this particular statement begs for the eye-rolling icon to come back. It's just about the most nonsensical, hyperbolic thing I've read here in a long time. Let's try to get some perspective, people.

Ok, so I was too curious and I went down and checked. The artist is Tom Kidd (who actually has been around for a while, just not in D&D to my knowledge.) The piece really looks better as a painting; as a book it's cut in half to be front and back covers.

This is a bit of an odd piece for him, here's his website and it's a bit hard to see how this fits in with the rest of his work.

I dunno -- it seems to fit with this one:

He's got a sort of drifty watercolor style, like Stephanie Law. I'm not sure I like the look as much for undead as well as I do faerie-type thingies, but it's pretty cool if you are looking for an "ethereal" or "ghostly" feel.

Know what?

I don't think the art is impressionistic. I think we are simply looking at a picture that is a lot smaller than the size of a bookcover.

Here is why:

View the pic in the first screen. If you are looking at it in IE, let it autoshrink to fit the frame, then get away from the screen, get as far back as you can.

I noticed that the further away from the picture I was the better (and clearer) it looked.

I think WotC found a neat picture and contracted for it and it turned out the pic was a lot smaller than what they thought it would be. Then to cover up the fact that when blown up you can see the brush strokes, they added some fog effect.

My reason for suggesting the fog effect? Look at the bottom of the pic- there is a "not foggy" line. Everything in that line looks a lot clearer. Look at the hands of the lich guy, they look a lot clearer.

I have noticed this effect on magic cards whose art was blown up poster size. When it was on a card it looked great, however poster sized it looked really bad.

Perhaps we are dealing with art intended for a magic card, which I know is not that big and designed for low resolution. Ussually.

Honestly,

I don't care if the cover was made out of plywood and had little carvings of skeletons!

I just want...more...ORCUS!!!! :D

While I find the cover different than the norm. I like it. In fact the more I look at it the more I like it. I love the Draconomicon cover it was a stunning piece of art. I am not saying that LM is better....Just different and that is a good thing.

Orcus is dead. I ate him.

Seriously, I don't understan all this Orcus-obsession that's going on. What's so hot about a stereotypical grossly overweight demon prince who loves undead? And yes, I am familiar with his history.

Orcus has always been a bit of a big deal and I am a constant fan of the fatman with a fetish for dead chicks, he rocks. I am also a Necromancer Games fan and Orcus is their way cooooool mascot. I want to draw a pic of the Fatman in sunglasses...

Quoting Monte Python:

"HERITIC! BURRRRRN THE INFIDEL! PERSECUTE! PERSECUTE!"

Perhaps its cause even though hes not a god, he's still a major player...

Divinity is debatable. I think there is an underdog element to it.

The original is an oil painting, roughly 36"w x 24"h. The style is very loose, Impressionist isn't a bad description. It was on display at Noreascon in Boston back in August. (I think it was roughly $2500 and it didn't sell during the show. So if anyone wants the picture, try e-mailing Kidd. It might still be available. ;-)
