As Impeesa alludes to WoTC (AKA GCFKATSR) released the original Unearthed Arcana some time in 1985. Only beat Monte by 20 ears or so.

TSR published AU first, but you're hardly likely to walk into a shop and walk out with a 1st edition UA rulebook instead of the 3rd edition AU rulebook (or the other way round).

Also, Monte asked WotC's permission to use the name AU. Then, some months later WotC announced UA. You'd think they would have refused Monte permission, just so that this kind of confusion didn't arrive?

Cheers,
Liam

In any event, Tric, welcome to the boards. :)

Thank you.

Page 58. The wildshaping ranger variant takes all of about five lines. Gains wildshape (small and medium animals only) + barbarian's fast movement, loses all combat styles.

That kind of solves my problem, then. Thank you, as well.

Page 58, in the list of brief summaries for other possible variants. Gives up the three bonus combat style feats in exchange for a druid's wildshape (restricted to small or medium animals only) and a barbarian's fast movement.

Already got it from some faster poster, but the intent was noted. Thanks.

So it seems like Wizards of the Coast should be the subject of your ire, but your wishes for them are inappropriate. After all, you could have looked at the book before you purchased it.

Maybe, maybe not. As for whether it is inappropriate or not, I'll leave to the observer. It's quite confusing, certainly you can see that. I did look over the book for several minutes, but I don't have the best short-term memory, so I didn't pay attention to such a tiny detail.

However, you may find that the shop you bought AU from will refund you if you return it in pristine condition and ask them very nicely. It is certainly worth a try.

Yes. I'll do that when I get the time. Also, I won't have to "ask them nicely". Since it's in the laws of the land, they can't refuse me. If they don't like it, that's their problem.

Yeah, but if you don't ask them politely, then you're being a jerk. It costs nothing to be polite.

As for the AU/UA thing, read the very last question of that FAQ.
http://www.montecook.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?mpress_MHB1_FAQ

You'll also notice, if you look around, that Monte Cook is now publishing a new edition of AU which is renamed as Arcana Evolved instead, so as to reduce the confusion factor.

I feel the OP has a very valid point. Cook knew exactly what he was doing when he named his book so similarly to the old TSR book. And there were probably a lot of people who bought it expecting one thing but got something very different.

It is most definately NOT the law of the land, unless you live in a very different land than I do. Stores are not by any means obligated to accept returned purchases. If you actually asked the clerk for UA and got AU, then he made a regrettable accident, and the store will probably be more than happy to offer a return or exchange. If you went to the store and picked up a book with a different cover, different author, different publisher, and different content than another book with a similar title, it's your own damned fault. Either way, there's no reason to be anything but polite.

IIRC Mr Cook first asked permission to use Unearthed Arcana but didn't get it. He then asked permission to use Arcana Unearthed and got that. The reason for wishing to call the book Unearthed Arcana was to communicate the idea that the book was an alternative PHB. A bad idea, since AU2e hardly was an alternative PHB in the first place. It was an expansion.

The land in this case appears to be Sweden. I don't know what the law says about returning books, though.

(25,000 miles south of Arvidsjaur ought to be Arvidsjaur a full lap around the world. Arvidsjaur is in Sweden.)

Edit: He has 30 days to return the book. And the VAT is lower too.
