Dude, I know exatly how you feel. There is a perfectly logical explanation for why the titles are so similer,

I would debate that. AU is an alternative core metasetting/rules book, not an expansion like UA was. I hated the title of AU ever since it came out, and it's proving rather confusing. Ever since we started using action points and bloodlines in my game, my players have been grabbing the wrong book.

Stop griping and take it back to the store for refund, then ask them to order it for you. It'd be a pretty crappy store that wouldn't do both.

Keep it civil: Don't engage in personal attacks, name-calling, or blanket generalizations in your discussions. Say how you feel or what you think, but be careful about ascribing motives to the actions of others or telling others how they "should" think. People seeking to engage and discuss will find themselves asking questions, seeking clarifications, and describing their own opinion. People seeking to "win an argument" sometimes end up taking cheap shots, calling people names, and generally trying to indimidate others. My advice: don't try to win.

Hi Tric and welcome to the boards,

As other people have suggested, hold onto the book and look at it again in a couple of days. It's most probably got lots of stuff in it that may appeal if you give it a good read-through. If not, I'm sure the book store would exchange it if you were nice about it.

Your rant did seem a little heated which in some ways is a little bit out of character for these boards where the general tenor is laid back and friendly. Demanding refunds etc. from game stores is most likely not the time when you want to be getting angry at people. If you looked through the book and still bought it...

Anyway, if the worst thing that happens to you in your life is to incorrectly purchase the wrong book, then you don't have too much to worry about. Just chill and remember - life's good. :)

Look forward to reading more of your stuff here on Enworld.

Best Regards

It is most definately NOT the law of the land, unless you live in a very different land than I do. Stores are not by any means obligated to accept returned purchases. If you actually asked the clerk for UA and got AU, then he made a regrettable accident, and the store will probably be more than happy to offer a return or exchange. If you went to the store and picked up a book with a different cover, different author, different publisher, and different content than another book with a similar title, it's your own damned fault. Either way, there's no reason to be anything but polite.

Indeed. I am a swede. :p

It's doesn't really matter if I'm "nice" about it. Not to say I wouldn't be. I'm merely illustrating the fact that the bookstore either suck it up and hand over the dough, or they suck it up and hand over the dough.

And yes, I won't be able to turn it in until next week or something along those lines... I'll read it. I just think a variant is redundant when I've already got the standard version, which as it happens satisfies me just fine.

Laid back? I'm so tired, I can't do much else. Seems I'll fit right in.

My stuff? If you want stuff, http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=5905262#post5905262 (Electricall is my original name, but Tric is my nick, and I now use it because otherwise people who don't know me call be Elec or something stupid)

The real shame is that Arcana Evolved is out now. Given a choice between the two, I know which one I'd pick.

Which brings up another thing I wanted to say: To each his own. This philosophy is quite handy, and applies to much of what has been said in this topic.

Tric,

Give the book of Monte's a chance. It is one of the most brilliant products for D&D in recent years.

Except of course, it's not for D&D. Legal tangles and all... :)

the_Jester: I thought I smelled that too.

i still say Gary wrote the UA for his powergaming scions.

it was released in 1985 for 1edADnD. don't buy it.

the book itself is poorly constructed and falls apart very easily.
