Life Without Gaming--What would we do???

Life without Gaming is just too horrible to think about.

And if I did think about it, I think that I would proberly be wondering around thinking to myself that "Something is missing from my life"

I wouldn't be so worried--we'd still be "playing" somehow...

All of us here are involved in gaming because the hobby appeals to our natural talents in creativity and imaginative expression. Hello. We are special.

Let's face it, we are all creative geniuses to varying degrees that share grand ideas spawned from not only our own imaginations but from sharing them with each other too. If the games we enjoy today didn't exist, we would be doing something similar anyways. Infact, if D&D hadn't been hatched in the early 1970's, I think the concept of the RPG would have appeared within a decade--the social climate in our western societies at the time were quite open (if not openning further) to many interests and pursuits. If it wasn't Gary Gygax et al, certainly someone else would have published an RPG concept. Don't ya think?

At least we are doing something with our minds! Gawd knows how often we--and I am confident you folks would agree--see how horribly unimaginative those non-gamers are. One wonders if they even have brains at all. (Ooops, my bad. I really should try to be a bit more forgiving.) While they do have brains they are rarely "switched on" when it counts. But we all knew that anyways... Well one could always convert a few. The potential's there I suspose...

In college I drank a river of beer and consorted with lots of loose women. I partied like a fool.

I regret that I didn't game more than I did. I wonder if I wouldn't have gotten more serious about gaming sooner, with the result being that I would have started Scrollworks years ago. I lament the fact that I wasted so many hours...

Ulrick, enjoy your game and don't sweat the difference in lifestyle between you and your RA. But mebbe you could swoop on his neglected woman?

I just spent another weekend of gaming.

And do I have to say its better than going to the bars.

On Friday Night, when I posted this topic, I DMed my Greyhawk Campaign.

Saturday afternoon was spent playing my modified Chainmail Rules for Large Skirmishes. This went well for all involved. I think I might have gotten the Guild of Wargamers and Roleplayers away from that god aweful warhammer skirmish rules they've be using.

Afterward I played RISK 2210 for the first time...and won. That game rocks.

Then late Saturday Night I played another Chainmail Skirmish game that was tied to the Greyhawk Campaign.

Today I plan on tracking down my DM to find out when he's going to run his game.

It was a good weekend.

I often wondered what people who don't game do.

My brother for example hates gaming. He has hated since we were 9 and 10. He was always getting into trouble, nothing bad just kid stuff. I was sitting at home gaming.

Now he has a high paying job, fishes every weekend, has his own house and a kid on the way, while me on the the other hand live in an apartment, work at a low paying crappy job and GAME TWICE A WEEK. We all know who has the better life

Let's see -

if I wasn't a gamer, I probably would have started hacking and gotten completely sucked into the hacker/cracker culture. I'd probably also have about half the social skills and twice the body odor, and proably have a criminal record to boot.

But thankfully, gaming found me.

I probably would have had fewer friends, and less of an outlet about being something of an outsider.

Mind you, gaming has not particularly helped or hurt my income. As for my social life, I have meet people with whom I can discuss history, mythology, and literature.

I have known gamers who are well off financially, and others who aren't. It is hard to make generalizations.

It is likely someone would have invented roleplaying games if Gygax and Arneson had not come along. However, I am glad that they did.

I'd still be playing Diablo 2. Maybe a little trying to create a cult, but mostly playing Diablo 2.

What would I do if I didn't game? That's a crazy question...

Obviously I'd have thousands of dollars that weren't spent on gaming supplies....

A world without gaming would suck because I would never have gotten interested in theatre, and more importantly--I would never have met any of the extremely cool people from here that i've had the pleasure of meeting--like Mark and all of my fellow playtesters for CreativeMountain Games, and Piratecat from way out in Boston, and hell, everyone from here that i've met. I love you guys!
