Lightsaber construction

As far as I know the only Star Wars items actually written by Lucas are the original Star Wars screenplay and subsequent novelisation, and the screenplays to the latest two films. He neither wrote nor directed The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi, so I guess those aren't suitable for your friend's needs, either.

A poser, to be sure.

My friend is being very picky. He might accept it if it was in the film, maybe.
Unless they say something in the third film, then, I think he's doomed to a life of disappointment. They never mention any aspects of lightsaber construction in any of the films so far; I'm pretty sure I'd remember, but maybe not. The only thing we can infer from the films is that a Jedi is capable of constructing one by himself, and that it's some kind of final test for being called Jedi (from Vader's comments in Return).

From what I remember of Young Jedi Knights, the color of your lightsabre basically depends on how you construct it and the materials you use. In the books, Luke told the Young Jedi Knights how to make a lightsabre, gave them schematics and guidelines, and sent them off.

It was this sort of personal cerimony kinda thing. The kids all went off and found/made thier crystals in a variety of ways, and built thier lightsabres. None of them really thought about what color thier lightsabre would be- it just sort of happened out of the personal process of building them.

So color IS determined by the materials, and the materials are determined by the Jedi building the thing. But unless the jedi is some sort of crazy genious who can calculate the exact hue of his sabre just by examining the materials and distances involved, the color is essentially "fate" or whatever. Its personal, but its also random.

The only thing that determines its color is the crystal used. Its not "random".
Some crystals produce certain colors.

This is all covered in numerous Expanded Universe novels which are part of continuity (but not cannon).

(Aside: Gotta love how starwars.com seprates continuity and cannon)

Anyway, I, Jedi, New Jedi Order Novels, and the Jedi Acadamy Trilogy mention this stuff.

Wadsn't the star wars novelisation actually done by Alan Dean Foster, but released with Lucas' name on it?

Well, thats true. But if you dont have any idea about different kind of crystals and you just kinda go looking for one taht might be "special" to you, the crystal you get is essentially random, and so the color is random as well. Its not that the materials used and particular schematics followed produce random results- they dont.

Its that the materials themselves are essentially random (or were in the books)- one guy found a crystal among a bunch of broken machines in the hollows of the old Yavin Four base, one girl (the techie smart one) grew hers in a mini pressure cooker thing. One girl went out running/flying to these lava tubes and found some in a cave.

None of them knew the exact properties of thier crystals, since they weren't crystologists. So thier results were esentially randomly determined by what kind of crystal they found, and what sort of shell/tooth/machinemade tube they used to make the sabre.

The only remotely canon description of a lightsabre's construction is from the RotJ radioplay, if you can find a copy of either the play or the script.

There are only four canon colorus of sabre blade: blue and green for Jedi, red for Sith, and purple for Mace Windu, because he's a mad mutha.

I hold the opinion that anybody who knows how and has the parts can build a lightsabre. The reason the Jedi have its construction as part of a Padawan's training process is because putting it together is a very precise endeavour; anything not properly aligned or shielded could expose the wielder to harmful radiation or worse. The fine construction is done either by computer (which anyone can do) or by a microscopic application of Move Object (which only trained Jedi can do).
