Limited Polymorph

Maybe for a succesful Polymorph, you need a material component of the thing you want to polymporh into. (It is difficult to take a troll with you )

I am not sure if there is any easy solution for this...

How about a Spellcraft check? Tougher creature = higher DC.

A mouse is easy. A troll, difficult. A dragon, almost impossible.

Both good ideas but then the spell would still be an instant kill spell. (The fish example)

I am going in the direction that if you want to learn a shape you would have to study that creature in it's natural environment. (A fish is not studiet well looking into water- Lights bending on the surface or something like that)

That might be nice. I think the key to working a limited polymorph is to use metamagic feats. I was working with a psion based one and this is what I got.

You can only poly to small and medium size creatures.

Base Levels:
2nd huminoid, giant, animal.
3rd Dire Animal, beast, M-humanoid, Vermin
4th Aberation, M-beast, ooze, plant
5th Dragon, legendary animal
6th Undead, construct
7th Elemental, outsider.

+1 lvl increase or decrease allowed size 1 step.

Ex fly, fine animal.
animal 2nd lvl.
Small->diminuitive->tiny->fine +3lvls

5th lvl spell.
