Limited spellcasting: Only every other level. Effect?

I don't see that generalization.
In campaigns now, sans Driddle limits, there are multiclassed (10/10) spellcasters who do very well for themselves.

IMHO, in the early levels, the game favors the high hp, fighter types. At the high levels, sans driddle limits, the game favors the wizard types. Wish and all that.

With these limits it prevents that from happening.

I think this is an excellent idea. Mind you the main classes you would be nerfing isn't actually wiz/sorcs. It would be clerics and druids. As long as you allow PrCs like Spell Sword, Arcane Archer, Dragon Disciple, Eldritch Master I think your arcane spellcasters wouldn't feel too nerfed. After all high level arcane spells were nerfed so heavily in 3.5 that they're not viable anyway.

Ya know, the issue of what to do with the DMG prestige classes never even entered my mind. Although ... Well, because you're dealing with a "prestige" class, you could reasonably infer that (my artificially instituted) spellcasting progression limits could be loosened slightly for those oh-so-noteable characters. It would make PrCs even more prestigious goals.

Keep in mind that those PrCs were designed specifically to allow multiclassed spellcasters to be on par with straight spellcasters in a standard magic-level setting. So no need whatsoever to relax your caster level limits even further for these guys, they will already be some of the most powerful caster builds!

In fact, for those PrCs that do the usual "+1 caster level" at every PrC level, it would be crucial to stick to your multiclassing requirement, so they would need to alternate those PrC levels with some other non-casting class.
