D&D 3E/3.5 List of Problem 3.5e spells? Where?

First Post
Has anyone come across or compiled a list of "problem" spells in 3.5e?

As I see it, Shapechange and Gate are on that list, because of "Balor Mining" and "Infinite Inherent Bonuses". What are the others?

....and where is that errata?!!!

What's infinite inherent bonuses?? I've heard of balor mining before... and that's more a problem with balors (ie - having a WEAPON listed as an (su) ability when it's just a damn weapon)

What's Balor Mining?

I assume its amethod of getting lots of balor swords. Of course, because the ability is (Su) it ends when the balor wants it to (or when shapechange ends). Thus its kind of hard to keep those swords around for any length of time. I suppose you could sell them, but anyone that can afford to buy one is going to be able to afford to hunt you down the moment that sword disappears.

Gate isn't really a problem spell. The 1,000xp component make it an expensive spell to cast.

Emotion and animal buff spells used to be useful. These are definate spell problems ;)

Emotion. An 8th-level spell whose various effects do not exceed the power of a 5th-level spell, and you call it useful? Ha.

As for the buff's... what's the point of a magic item when you can get constantly have the effect without having to spend the dough? The old spells made the magic items worthless.

I'd happily spend 1000xp * 5 for a +5 inherent bonus, rather than 5000xp * 5. If you'd allow that.....can I join your game? :)

As for Balor Mining:
  • Shapechange into a Balor.
  • Drop your vorpal sword.
  • The vorpal sword does not dissapear when your spell ends. Read the spell description where it says: "Parts of your body or pieces of equipment that are separated from you do not revert to their original forms." Show said piece to yer DM.
  • Laugh hysterically.
  • Change into another balor, with another vorpal sword.
  • Repeat once per round for the duration of the spell.
  • Ponder who will buy all of these vorpal swords....

....Tip o' the hat to the Trollmeister, FrankT. He may not have come up with it, but I learned it from him.

umm.. I am not sure where you are from.. but..

srd:
Emotion
Enchantment (Compulsion) [Mind-Affecting]
Level: Brd 3, Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets: All living creatures within a 15-ft. radius
Duration: Concentration
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

Doesnt look like an 8th level spell to me, nor does it have effects that are 5th level.. It used to be an interesting spell to take, that would allow you to have several effects. None of these effect were worth the slot it took of course, but you had a lot of choices to make up for that.

As for the animal buffs, they werent a problem. If they were in your campaign then fine, but it was shown on these boards even in many different ways that they were ok. The inability to gain extra spell slots was definately hindersome, much better to get the item. Someone may cast dispel magic at some point (a very common tactic), good thing I had this item instead. Oh no I rolled low today, too bad I didnt have that item....

Somewhat back on topic though, do you consider polymorph a problem? Its serious lack of out-of-combat uses isnt good ;)

Or are you going for 'problems' that are game breaking rather than too limiting?

Actually, if you gate in 2 Efreet (requires caster level 20 or above) you can get *6* wishes per 1000xp, for a +5 inherent bonus and a free magic item. And it's not even an evil spell (Efreet aren't [Evil] creatures).
