Little enemies with big effects

Darkmantles. 3E Darkmantles, not the wimpy 3.5 ones.

My players hate the damned things. And they usually put somethnig else on front of that expletive. :D

Simple creatures, small damage, mediocre AC and low hit points - but start casting darknesses about , and introducing miss percentages, and my players go ape. They NEVER prepare light spells or daylight spells - no clue why, after as many of these little buggers I've sent on them. :D

First time I ever introduced darkmantles about four years ago, I almost caused a TPK. now, they just annoy the heck out of them, and cause the players to curse my name until the last one is killed. A simple half-dozen of these things will tick off 6 7th level PC's in my games for a good hour. It tickles me when it happens. :p

They call doing the same thing over and over again hoping it works insanity. :]

me (12th level sor) and 6 more players (also 12th level) encounterd a 5th level cleric medusa (CR 11) none survived.

that was the result of low die rolls and lack of common sense.
we were actually looking for a medusa and there were a bunch of stoned victims in the room and none of us though about closing their eyes all the more reason for the DM to laugh at us.
if i would have got a 9 instead of a 4 on my fort save i would have turned HER into stone and she needed to get a 18 on the fort save to resist my flesh to stone.
and what more, there were 2 losers in the group that had blindsight (they played dragons with a level ajastment (sp?) equel to 12) and they did not close their eyes either.
