Round 416: Rouille ignores the directive (rolled 26 Will save vs. DC 13).
Rouille, decides to take this battle in a different direction. To use a word from Rouille's language: melee. He lands at 30N90E, then trots over to 45N75E and bites Sam (rolled 22) for 7 points of damage. Sam has 56 HP remaining.

Round 417: The magic word rolls off of Rouille like water off a duck's back. (rolled 11 caster level check).
Rusty moves, rather conventionally, not wanting to show off like Sam, to 55N75E, and tries to grab Sam with a claw. Rouille successfully holds on to Sam (28 touch attack, 24 vs. 21 grapple check), and squeezes him for 5 points of non-lethal damage. Sam has 56 HP remaining, and has taken 5 points of non-lethal damage.

OOC: It looks like Rouille doesn't have improved grab, so the damage for every successful grapple check is 1d3+strength bonus, assuming he is medium. I couldn't tell if that was how you rolled the damage or not.

Round 418:

Sam will make three attempts at escaping the grapple, at BAB +11, +6, & +1. If any attempt should succeed, he will exit 5 feet south of the grapple square (I'm not sure which square that is, I assume it is Sam's square), then tumble 15 feet south.

OOC: Actually, I used bite damage, thinking that it gets its natural attack damage. I thought this because of the exception that monks get for doing lethal (and more) damage, and the dragon's natural attack is lethal, unlike a normal humanoid's natural attack, but I have since figured out the logic in not using natural attack damage. I rerolled using 1d3+Str bonus. If Sam does not escape the first attempt, shouldn't it be a full-round action to make further attempts?

Round 418: Sam escapes on the first attempt (25 vs. 18 grapple check), and tumbles to 45N80E.
Rouille moves to 50N75E and grabs Sam again (33 touch attack; 33 vs. 14 grapple check), moving into Sam's space and dealing another 4 points of non-lethal damage. Sam has 56 HP remaining, and has taken 9 points of non-lethal damage.

Should I time compress until there is a round that Sam is not grappled?

OOC: Actually I ruled that the damage is lethal unless the dragon takes -4 on the grapple check, just like a monk. The difference between the dragon and the monk is that the monk's damage for his unarmed strike is listed, while a medium creature's unarmed strike is not listed in its statblock, but assumed to be 1d3+strength bonus. The dragon can use his claw/claw/bite routine once the hold is established and the dragon substitutes attack rolls at -4 for grapple checks. You are right about no tumbling if the first escape attempt fails.

Please go ahead and time compress for a non-grapple situation.

OOC: I think I am finally getting a handle on grappling. It could be worse. We could be using first edition grappling, pummeling, and overbearing rules.

Round 419: Sam does not escape the first attempt (26 vs. 26 grapple check), nor the second or third.
Rouille hits with a claw and a bite, missing with other claw and wings. Sam takes 11 points of damage, and has 36 HP remaining.
Round 420: Sam does not escape. Rouille hits with a claw and two wings for 14 points of damage. Sam has 22 HP remaining.
Round 421: Sam does not escape. Rouille hits with bite and wing for 16. Sam has 6 HP remaining.
Round 422: Sam escapes and tumbles away to 30N80E. Rouille moves to Sam and grabs hold again, dealing 3. Sam has 3 HP remaining.
Round 423: Sam escapes and tumbles away to 15N80E. Rouille moves to Sam and grabs hold again, dealing 3. Sam has 0 HP remaining.
Round 424: In a final act of desperation before dying, Sam yells, "Flee!" (27 Concentration check). The magic word gets through the first line of defense (rolled 17 caster level check), and Rouille runs (Rolled 11 Will save vs. 20 DC) out of the arena. :(

So, Gansk, what is next in this arena?
