What Came Before
The Last War is over. You joined up young and did more than your fair share of overt, covert and questionable acts for Braeland and its King. After the war most of your unit decided to stay together and form an adventuring band while others left to rebuild their lives. You and your childhood friends, deciding that a normal life would be too boring, formed an adventuring band [Choose a name amongst yourselves--DM] and headed out into the newly peaceful world.

Years later and with a reputation for dependability under your collective belts, at the foot of the Demon Wastes you met the Jade Dragoons as both of your groups were on the run from the indigenous demon-blooded tribes local to the area; the Dragoons stole your airship as one of them was of Lyrander blood and forced you to trek back to civilization on foot.

Over the years you've run into Jade Dragoons on numerous occasions as the both of your groups tend to run in the same circles. Most recently you were in Kaarnath, hired to infiltrate some ancient dwarven ruins and retrieve a diamond scepter once used by the Dwarven kings of old. Unfortunately, the Dragoons were hired to scavenge relics in the same ruin and instead of facing you openly, they called in Karnaathi armed forces and you were arrested for theft and espionage.

You've spent the last 48 days incarcerated with a bunch of worthless Karnaathi undesirables and were set free two weeks ago. Unfortunately, you lost most of your gear as it was either confiscated by the Karn armed forces or stolen on-site by the Dragoons.

You find yourselves heading home now, to Hommlet. You haven't visited in over 7 years, though you're sure that not a lot has changed; its a small town after all. Right about the time you left initially, a group of retired soldiers came into town and cleaned out some cultists that had been causing some problems; honestly, you don't remember much about it save that the cultists didn't worship the gods so much as they worshiped the elements. Still, in your work you've seen stranger things.

What Happens Now
You find yourselves about 4 days southwest of Ardev, just within reach of Hommlet when you come across some burning wagons and dead bodies. You can hear screaming nearby. As you get closer you see a hulking, heavily muscled shaggy humanoid with a pair of massive horns throw a child into one of the burning wagons; the child's mother screams. The creature spots you and roars, pulling a massive axe from the corpse of a ochre-robed figure. Several people huddle in the broken remains of the wagon, cowering.

[DM: Roll initiative please, post the link to your roll as well.]
[DM: Please post your Name, current HP, your AC, and your Saves in the title bar of your message during combat.]
[No battle-mat right currently, I'll be able to do those when I get my old computer back as I don't have any mapping software on this machine; no maps for a couple weeks... unless someone knows of a free, easy to use mapper.]

Vaeryn, 36 HP, 17AC (-->18 after move), F+2/R+9/W+1

Initiative 23

Vaeryn moves quickly to get within range of the scene of destruction, readying his bow as he moves and firing a single arrow at the horned monstrosity. He also focuses on defending himself against the same target (+1 dodge bonus to AC for a total of 19.)

**Edit--Now that I know distance, Vaeryn will move diagonally, spreading out of everyone's way, but closing to within 30' to get his PBS bonus.

Attack 15 (+1 if within 30') so a 16.
Damage 4 (+1 if within 30') so 5.

Hey ugly, why don't you come face someone who can fight back!

"Somebody pull the kid out of there!"
I don't know what's going on, but I know who I'm gonna hurt!

Unity charges forward, trying to get to the foe. Unable to get his weapon while moving so quickly, he instead attempts to bring his heavy warforged arm to bear, swinging it hard at the enemy's head (Attack 15, damage 9, AC 18).

Ranulf; HP 60 (68) of 60; AC 17 (15); F+10 (+12)/R+3/W+4 (+6)

Initiative 18 http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1235692

Over the years, the group had grown accustomed to Ranulf's occasional wild swings of behavior. He had always been a bit of a savage, and the war and its aftermath had only heightened that trait. In short, these were the sorts of moments that he seemed to live for- and the kinds of moments when his compatriots were most glad that he was on their side...

As they had been moving towards their destination, Ranulf's voice had boomed in a rather obscene marching song, carrying his heavy feet along the road as lightly as an elven dancer's. But at the first signs of the trouble ahead, the marching song faded away, and he drew a deep, chuffing breath. The scene before them registered very quickly- his fighting instincts were well-honed indeed. Almost before he realized it, he had dropped his satchel by the side of the road and drawn his long-hilted greatax. He drew in a deep breath, and let it out in a crashing shout that devolved into a terrible howl after the first few words. "Civilians clear out!" Even as the echoing call faded, he surged forward into battle.

OOC: [sblock] Rage 1 of 3, round 1 of 9, Stats change to those in parentheses in title bar. Drawing longax during Move action- if within 40 feet, then attack. If not, double move, but can't Charge since he needs to draw the ax. If attack is available, roll is 18+11= 29 ( http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1235722 ), damage would be 1d12+9= 13 ( http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1235724 ), since I forgot to declare power attack before I rolled. I'll remember next round. [/sblock]

Karna; HP 44; AC 18; F+4/R+6/W+6

Initiative 22

Karna draws some fine dust and a dried object of some kind out with one hand from her spell component pouch. In the other hand she readies a small dart. She chants something gutteral and almost certainly Draconic in origin. In a flash of movement, she crushes the spell components in her fist, sprinkles them over the dart, and whips it towards the minotaur, sending an eery green facsimile of the dart streaking towards the furry beast.

As soon as the spell leaves her hand, Karna begins to move carefully around the minotaur towards the child in the wagon.

Leigh Valendor, Cleric 4, Hp: 36/36; Saves: +5/+2/+8

"By the Host!" Leigh exclaims as she sees the innocent child being thrown into the burning wagon,"What abomination would be capable of such a vile act?"

She shouts to her companions,"We must save that child!"

Her inner emotions turn to thoughts of anger, she instinctively furrows her brow as she hefts her morningstar from her belt, advancing towards the creature.

She touches her closed fist to her chest and intones a brief prayer as she walks toward the immolation.

OOC:

Move 20' closer to the creature, hopefully entering melee range next round. Cast Bulls Strength on self, using Divine Metamagic (Extend Spell) -- uses up 2 turn undead attempts for the day - 7 remaining.

Spells active: Bulls Strength - 80 rounds

Round 1--
Vaeryn, determined to put an end to the people's suffering as quickly as possible, darts forward and looses an arrow at the shaggy beast. The shaft strikes true, sinking deeply into the creature's chest. The horned beast seems to ignore it, however.

Karna, just a 1/2 second later, slags the arrow and burns a smoking hole in the beast's side, it howls in anger.

All this has given Ranulf and Unity a chance to run forward and do what they do best, driving the beast goes down to one knee under their combined blows.

Taking advantage of the confusion, Leigh steps forward cautiously, calling upon her faith and infusing herself with divine strength.

Curiously, Pick does nothing. Its as if he hasn't noticed anything happening at all. Unfortunatley, his friends are too busy saving people to notice thier companion's strange inaction.

The great shaggy-pelted humanoid pulls itself to its feet and lowers its massive horned brow; it CHARGES at Leigh, drawing attacks from both Ranulf, who guts it, spilling entrails and spattering blood everywhere, and Unity, who deals it the deathblow, splintering one of its horns in the process!!!

[DM Message - Roll Listen and Spot checks.]

There is a mighty ROAR of rage as a 2nd horned beast, a minotaur you think, steps from the wreckage of a cart it has been ransacking. It raises its massive greataxe high above its head.

1 minotaur down, 1 to go.

Ranulf; HP 60 (68) of 60; AC 17 (15); F+10 (+12)/R+3/W+4 (+6)

Ranulf gave a fierce growl of triumph as the first beast fell, but with the blood-red haze of his rage clouding his senses, he paid little attention to his surroundings. Only the sheer volume of the second minotaur's roar penetrated his fierce brutal reverie, and he turned his attention upon the new foe.

OOC: [sblock] Rage 1 of 3, round 2 of 9, Notice roll 9 (if Rage even allows it, http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1244155 ). Move to second minotaur (40 feet or less), Power attack for -4/+8, attack 9 ( http://invisiblecastle.com/find.py?id=1244180 )- a total miss! Better luck next round! [/sblock]

Notice (1d20=7)

Unity slides toward the second foe with a swagger not entirely his own, the shortsword on his belt sliding easily into his hand. With no words other than a simple "Hah!" he lashes forward, attempting to drive the weapon deep into the minotaur's body.
