OK! Now that I have your attention. Reference the spell Summon Monster, I want to summon a celestial giant eagle or celestial giant owl. The celestial part and animal part are easy to find. However, how big is a giant owl? What are its stats? There doesn't seem to be anything in the core books on this. Unless I am missing something.

I think in the 3.0 SRD and 3.0 MM they were under "Giant Eagle" and "Giant Owl" rather than "Eagle, Giant" and "Owl, Giant". That's probably the root of the confusion (unless, like you said, Tailspinner was trying to look under the Animal appendix).
