Looking for a deep space rpg

Um, Space Atlas 1, Space Atlas 2, Space Atlas 3 and Space Atlas 4? :)
 I dunno. I never bought them, I just remember that they existed. I had a GURPS friend who thought they were pretty neat.

None of the wowed me, but I might go back to rip out ideas if I were running a space game.
That's how I treat all RPG material.

I got with my group and showed them the free downloads (which almost every game had something so that was pretty cool).

So the consesus is Dawning Star, and really for the price you can't beat it. It's 14.99 right now. Though I am a little miffed because Helios Rising is currently out of stock at IPR so I will wait a while for that one.

My group was really torn between Dawning Star and Fading Suns. Both seem like they are realy in depth settings and I told them that I was cool with running either. And to tell you the truth, I secretly enjoyed watching them hem and hah over the choice. I literally thought it might come to blows for a second but nothing lol.

Thanks again guys for all the suggestions.

T20 has a free "quick start" PDF. It only contains one class (Merchant) but enough of the basic rules to get a game or few out of it.

Free T20 Trial PDF

I second T20. Great setting and familiar rules. Some folks above voiced concerns about the possible varying levels of PCs created through the prior service rules. You aren't limited by that. Everybody can roll up characters using the prior service rules, but the GM can then even up the levels for the PCs.

Thanks,
Rich

Not to try and take away from the other fine settings that have been discussed here, but now that it's been officially announced, I can finally plug a project I just finished with, which is a space opera style setting called Reign of Discordia. Reality Deviant Publishing is publishing it for the True20 system, and I have to admit that while I haven't yet seen the art or the layout, I am pretty proud of this one.

This will be supported with more products throughout the year.

I'd suggest GURPS Space even if only to raid for ideas to incorporate into other systems.

Indeed. The book is almost rule-less, and the few rules that do exist - systems for rolling up star systems and alien creatures (including intelligent ones, complete with their psychology) - are easily portable to other systems.

Highly recommended, no matter what RPG you choose for play.
