Looking for a monster book recommendation

Dessert creatures?!? Great! I can submit my conversion of Flans, and some puddings, Jello's, and maybe even my cakedaemon.

I hope they accept my Dire Fondue, I am awefully fond of that one. I'm a bit leery of even submitting my mousse-folk, they are a bit 'done'.

And for my desert dessert creature, I've got an Ice-Scream Sand Witch.....

So is fried flumph an appetizer, an entre or a dessert? I forgot to ask that drow ambassador who offered me some.

Necromancer Games "Tome of Horrors" would be another good choice, with over 400 monsters in it. Granted not all of them would suit a desert climate, but Im sure alot of them would.

True but there are some from Necropolis. If you need a book FILLED with desert monsters, Necropolis has a great big section of them (This is not to say I don't think you should get CC3. I know I would like you too! :) )

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but I would suggest you take a look at Sovereign Press' Bestiary of Loerem. It contains a lot of creatures that fit the bill of what you are looking for. Less monster and more creature. It's a good book and a hidden jewel...

I counted up my d20 monster books last night. The total counting campaign books with monsters in them came to 31. OIf all of them, I can honestly say that Necropolis is your best bet. CC1 and MM2 are also good choices. Monsters of Faerun has a few choice beasties for the type of setting you are talking about as does Liber Beastarious (my current favorite). Bastion's Minions is the best place to get unusual stuff.

Tome of Horrors. It's got heaps of goooood monsters for a fair price.

Monsternomicon is good (one of the most attractive and well thought out monster books ever), but it's not as chock full of critters and some of them are very setting specific.

Tome of Horrors all the way.

Thanks all! This is very helpful; I'm going to have to go to the FLGS with a shopping list in hand.

Regarding Necropolis - this sounds like it might be good as a monster source but what I've read of the adventure don't think I would use that, which sounds like it reduces its value as a purchase. I hate buying a book when I won't use half of it.

The review of Bestiary of Loerem here makes it sound really great in some ways - naturalistic and relatively low-CR monsters - but it doesn't include alignments or D&D spells (which could only be worthy of comment if there are spell-using creatures lacking a D&D spell list). Ghostwind, would you agree with the comments made on the review's page?

For the most part, yes. The lack of alignment really isn't an issue with me as most "creatures" as opposed to "monsters" tend to have a neutral alignment anyway. The same goes for spell usage.

If you take a look at the book at your FLGS you will see that many of the creatures have other abilities that make them equally formidable, such as poison. Personally, I think it's a good book that offers alternatives to the standard monster fare. If you really want to use monsters with spell-like abilities, you can always tack on a template or do a little custom-DM tweaking. The best advice I can give is take a serious look at it and see if it suits your tastes and style. If it does, go for it. :)

I guess I was more concerned if there were spell-casting monsters which were somehow missing info regarding their spellcasting. A lack of alignment doesn't bug me at all - I'm trying to run a somewhat gritty shades-of-grey campaign as it is, plus as you note a lot of natural creatures are neutral.

Loerem Bestiary, I knew I was forgetting one pure monster book.

Oh and the two nightmares and dreams ones from MEG, they are horror themed monster books.

Close othe ones include the pdfs Book of Broken Dreams (horror templates) and the Book of Templates.

Of course there is the hosted creature collection here which is quite good.

I think every straight monster book has been mentioned now, we'll see if anybody comes up with others
