Looking for a Point Buy - Dice mix posted here once...

If you know what I'm speaking of, you probably know it by the title already.

On a few occasions, when different character ability generation methods were posted here, there was a method, which used Point Buy mixed with some randomization to make it more interesting and less static.

It would be nice, if anyone could post the method (or any similar) again!

Thank you very much! :)

In our campaign we use what we call "Heroic Point Buy"

4d6 drop the lowest added to 32. (32+3d6)

That gives a range between 35 and 50. Most characters have around 40-46 points.

Make sure you do the same for your NPC's. When using monsters from any "Manual" make sure you make them slightly above average.

We have found this a fantastic way to have heroes that seem heroic in their stats.

Of course if you want to make them less "heroic" decrease the 32 to a 25.

What I am looking for is a method, which does not only randomize the number of points to be used in point buy, but the abilities, which are determined by point buy - so that you avoid the usual dump stats and mostly even stats to a degree, that are so common with point buy.

I believe I had seen one here, but unfortunately didn't copy it.

For these reasons outlined above we do not like point buy that much and got back to rolling stats rather than using point buy, but I would like a method, which combines the best of both worlds.

Well, one option (presented in that old thread, not sure if it was by me...) would be a small-pool point buy (say, base 8 with a 12 point 'pool'), with 1d6 per stat added in. another is rather metagamish, but it's the stat pool system (my own invention, also presented in that thread), where you have a pool of scores that the group divides out among themselves. The second one probably isn't what you're looking for, but the first one, I think, is.

Thanks, Buttercup.

Altho it is not the thread I remember, which was one I posted in as well, it also has some interesting (well mainly one by KDL) ideas! :)

EDIT: Hmm... maybe if you search for a post from me containing "9d6", it could be unveiled... :)

I've posted my method in a few threads.

1) Roll randomly.

2) Take a look at everyones highest roll. The highest of the highest rolls replaces everyones highest roll.

3) Look at everyones lowest roll. The highest of the lowest rolls replaces everyones lowest roll.

I glanced through that thread, and I didn't see the point/roll combo method mentioned. If I recall, that thread was several pages long as well.
