D&D 5E (2014) Looking for Campaigns for 14+ level PCs

Marilith has a +8 on Wis sav w/ advantage your looking at +10-12, so they are going to make that most of the time. Doesn't seem to bad to me.

If you say so. In my game, because it's such a combat changing spell, the sorcerer tends to Heighten it, making MR redundant. So a top-most Hard for 4 17th level PCs including a Marilith would be 1 of the latter and 2 Shadow Demons. If she gets banished, the encounter is trivial.

So, Reynard's point above is right, I believe; 5e doesn't do BBEG that well, you need lots of lower level foes.

Something to keep in mind when looking for high-level adventures to DM.

Maybe, we are low on casters and I run a low magic setting. They are level 14 and the best thing they have is +1

That's probably it. My guys grew up in 1e all the way to now, and the idea that D&D doesn't use magical items is alien to them (which I get). Which is too bad, because the CR system probably works a bit better when all the attacks are doing half damage to the fiends, etc. Mind you, the DMG has a huge section on magic items, so I don't know how optional they meant it to be in practice, lol.

We don't have one of those either. Just to be clear:
Fighter, Ranger, Wizard, Rogue, Fighter, Druid
But that's the point: If you are trying to design a high level adventure, you don't know what the players will have, and it really really matters at high level.

Which is probably why WotC are so reluctant to publish one - just think how many complaints they would get about encounters being too easy or too difficult. If yo want to do it at all you need to do it yourself so the encounters fit the party.

Oh I wasn't saying make the Marilith the BBEG. For a 17th level group I would have at least 2 Marilith's a Balor and maybe 4 glabrezus. If want them to fight a monster solo, it needs to be much tougher (tiamat level) or custom made (which is what I prefer).

I roll about 100 d20 rolls and put them in a spreadsheet before the adventure Then I just in order and hide them as I use them.

Do you ever find yourself knowing what the next roll is and using it to target the really high AC PC or anything? IOW, does knowing which number is coming up affect your decisions?

I agree completely, I don't think I ever suggested otherwise.

Wow...ok (and this is not a criticism) you don't really use the CR system from the DMG, am I right? (The encounter you describe is an adjusted XP of 180,000)
