Looking for feedback

.5 Elf

First Post
Hi all,

I just finished the prelim work on my obsidian portal site for my upcoming campaign. I was hoping to get some outside perspectives / feedback.

Is the site sufficiently clear? I am going to use it to advertise my game and I am sure there will be newbies and first timers who will see it. Apart from system specific stuff do you think it is well laid out? Anything you might add? Anything I should drop?

The folk here at En World are a knowledgeable bunch so I welcome any and all constructive analysis.

Wow the silence was deafening...

Well to try and get some sort of topic started here, how about the fact that this is basically planned to be a 20 person West marches on Steroids?

Anyone have any advice tips or tricks on that front? Open source materials you use? What about lessons learned?

Looking at it now.

Nice title!!

Nice links to get the ruleset, and I like the picture.

Everything on the site seems pretty clear. Any idea about how the group will get together and the procedure for creating the world? That was one of my big questions.

Looks interesting, overall.

Well my plan is to hold weekly meetings until the end of January as recruits contact me. I will use the OP site to set reminders for the meetings and schedule them.

Once I have 4-5 new recruits at a time, I will set up a meeting. In the mean itme I am going to NYC meetups from D&D groups and face to face introducing myself and recruiting there as well.

The Main NYC D&D meetup I plan to attend / participate in and hopefuly draw from has about 1500 people give or take, someone's gotta be interested in my lil game.

Apart from that I am also doing the usual thing with fliers at hobby shops and libraries to drive people to the Bad Wrong Fun (BWF) site.

Additionally I am starting conversations about the project all over the place from here to the rpg.net, Mongoose's boards Design Mechanism's Boards the NYC / NJ Craigslists and Obsidian Portals Boards.

I figure if I collect ideas to improve and spread word of mouth at the same time by Late Jan I may wind up having to turn players away even.

Another nice thing is that I am now being plugged as a partner site by the Makers of Runequest 6 on their website and Lawrence Whitaker has also plugged my experiment on his boards at Design Mechanism and sent me playtest materials to support our effort.

Kinda a rambling response but I am kinda a rambling man. I do better when I can sit and look at what a wrote for a long time so sorry if I was unclear about anything!

After the initial recruitment phase is over it will be up to players to use mailing lists for their "camps" to schedule games themselves with me through the mailing list and the BWF site. The Obsidian Portal Site explains about that on the main page under the heading of Unique features of Bad Wrong Fun.

Oh one other thing I am gonna want to do is make videos of the sessions as well.

I'm glad to see you here on Enworld as well.

I just want to reiterate here that this is an heroic undertaking, that I'm far too cowardly to try it, and to wish you all the luck in the world.

I'll follow your post on both sites.

Thanks for the well wishes!

I wouldn't be too 'fraid of trying it personally, whats the worst thing that could happen? You fail? The entire RPG community sees you run your mouth and fall flat on your face? You get lynched by swarms of disappointed players?

But seriously folks, if you don't swing the bat you won't ever hit any home runs.

Honestly very little "bad stuff" could really happen if it doesn't work out, of course I have a different perspective of what "bad stuff" is, perhaps moreso than most people.

If you really are interested in trying it out or brainstorming ideas to make it work I would happily assist in any way I can, I can be reached at my gaming email - the.maze.controller @ gmail dot com.

I think the biggest hurdle to overcome is dealing with apathy / recruiting initially, people are skeptical and no one wants to deal with "that guy". Since no one knows me personally, things will move slow at first. I have my brother interested (Altho he has a baby on the way so he may not join.) and an old childhood buddy who I am going to reach out to since I just moved back to NYC but everyone else coming to the table will be strangers.

The only other issue is going to be with getting people to make use of the OP site. I already have 6 people interested supposedly and the site and serious advertising efforts on my part started Wed the 7th I think.(A date that will live in infamy!) Out of those 6 potentials who have emailed me I have had only 2 join the site thus far.

I am okay with that tho since the plan includes vetting potentials in person anyway with mini sessions and 1 shot games etc. I am in no rush to start playing honestly, I want to build slowly and then have an epic 6-8 month run before I take a breather break.

My first meet and greet session is going today at the Compleat Strategist in midtown Manhattan from noon to 4 where I will do Q&A spitball ideas for the program, collect feedback, and delegate smallish tasks to volunteers.

I will keep you guys posted.

P.S. - Oh almost forgot but caught in my preview review, the other big hurdle for this campaign is game system specific. I am not going with the market leader, so there is some reluctance regarding "buy in" there. I will say that this is a two edged sword however. I find that players who are open to multiple systems are usually a little better than rabid fanbois of one or system or another. I also seek to overcome that buy taking advantage of the low price point to get involved = $1.00.

I am also working out ideas with some people which will involve a "Bad Wrong Fun Card" - which some local dealers and some major players may choose to honor for discounts on gaming supplies.

More details on that when / if it picks up significant steam.
